Biggest runaway? Mario Kart Wii.

That game will outsell GTA4 combined by the end of this generation and will be the biggest seller console game this generation (excluding WiiSports and WiiPlay).

i think so too, although i'd say excluding the whole set of wii franchise games.. wii fit and mk wii are rising steadily together, who knows which will pull out on top

Haze definitely did poorly and flopped, but it still sold a decent amount of copies if not far below expectations, and it could easily end up with more than half a million lifetime. Anyways, I'm going to say before it even came out...Afrika. There's no chance that a realistic picture taking game set in Africa would sell well in Japan, and a release in America is so far off that no one will care by the time it comes to the region (if ever). Still though, Alone in the Dark is the biggest flop of the year so far. Its sales are absolutely embarrassing.

Anyways, the runaway success of the year easily comes down to Mario Kart Wii. Its sales are incredible across all 3 regions, and it beat its predecessor in a couple months.

Biggest flop - Haze. Although it could soon be Too Human.

Biggest hit - Mario Kart Wii.

I would have to agree with this. MKWii is doing far better than expected and people were expecting it to be huge. I guess releasing it against GTA4 wasn't such a bad idea after all.

MKWii is selling quite predictably, but even so, it must still be selling well above Nintendo's expectations. The game's been out for months and I still have yet to see a single copy at retail. Not sure if that's incredibly impressive, or an incredible miss for Nintendo for not being able to satisfy demand for this long.

Wii Fit has been a success from the standpoint that they are selling faster than production is capable of keeping up with, but it has unquestionably sold under the expectations of virtually everyone who was bullish on the game earlier this year before the NA release. In all fairness, most of those expectations were completely unrealistic. Sales by year's end should be interesting since it continues to sell out and Nintendo should have ample supply for the holiday season.

Haze has hit well below expectation both critically and commercially. Easily this year's Lair for the PS3. Overhyped and underperformed about sums it up.

Alone in the Dark wins the prize for the biggest multi-platform miss. A long standing franchise has officially been killed.

LBP has the potential to be the season's biggest hit for the PS3, or it may well end up being the biggest hyped title to see mediocre (respectable, but below expectation) sales.

Wii Music has the potential to be Nintendo's first Wii series miss. It will still sell respectably, barring any commercial disaster due to public unwillingness to buy a somewhat muddled implementation of what initially seemed like a great concept, but it will not see the runaway success level of the previous Wii series games.

You're a day early there sport: Afrika sold 20k on its first day in Japan, which is far above expectations.

You're right on the money here, though. Considering how Atari expected it to sell over two million copies...yeah, major floppage.

As for runaway success, it'd have to be Mario Kart. If we include 07 games that are still selling I'd say Call of Duty 4, or Mario & Sonic, but for '08 games Mario Kart takes it by a country mile.

If NG2 is the biggest flop of 08', this is the best year in gaming ever.

If you're talking about sales, NG2 probably can't be considered a flop. That being said, as far as "quality" it WAS the biggest flop for me of the year. I expected much more.

For this year's runaway hit, I guess MKWii, it's somewhat tough for me to give it to a prominent game on a system that has such a large install base, though. If it was based on install base (and quality) I'd say MGS:4. I guess I'm just not good at determining flops/successes based on sales. I'd rather talk about what games are great and which ones disappointed.

Ninja Gaiden 2 has sold over a million copies, according to Microsoft. That's the best selling Ninja Gaiden to date. How is that a flop? http://gamerscoreblog.com/press/archive/2008/08/28/njgdnbrs.aspx

MKWii is definitely a runaway success. Been sold out at a lot of places for a long time.

Because blogs are the most reliable source of information. According to the site, .68 million so far sold for it.

What? Joke post? Or do you just not know who runs that website?
