Forums - Nintendo - Pick your poison

It seems to me from reading blogs, posts, and the like that with some people there is no winning.

Nintendo metnions that some games are under development while at E3 but does not show anything ... and it gets lambasted.

Capcom shows less than half-completed build of a new game (Dead Rising: Wii) to have something at GC ... and it gets lambasted.

In other words, with some people, it seems you cannot win. And this seems to be much more of a problem with the Wii than other consoles.

Square shows a dance mix of scenes (cut? in-game? CGI?) from FF-XIII without saying how far along the game is or when it will be released, and everyone seems to think things are progressing nicely.

Am I just being a bit over-sensitive or are Wii players just over-demanding or are there people who want the Wii to fail so much that they nitpick everything about it -- deserved and undeserved.

Deserved. It is a last gen console entered into a current gen fray with a way to get money fast.

and tetronitroteurolene BTW.

A combination of both.

"Like you know"

That is one of the reasons I am boycotting Nintendo fanboys: attitude problem. I am not euphoric about the Wii 3rd parties offerings (the 2008 lineup is all crap IMO), but I am even less interested in the (fake) HD consoles lineup. Some months ago everyone wanted Ubisoft head (I loved it, I hate Ubisoft shitty games on all platforms). Then Ubisoft shows some games that are not mini games compilation and most boycott fanboys seems to forgive them. EA gets a free pass just because they are making a lot of games for the Wii (some people still try to say that MOHH 2 is not a shitty game). Capcom have been lazy with their Wii projects, however they shouldn`t be mentioned along with Ubisoft or EA (true shovelware artisans). Sure Capcom grade for their Wii support may be a C+, but that is amazing when everyone else got a F for fail.

And yes, gaming media is harsher with Nintendo.

I don't think the examples connect as much as you think they do Mike from Morgantown.

Nintendo got lambasted at E3 for:

1. Spending 80% of the conference talking about games many people on this site don't care about, while having better games to show. Would it have killed them to cut the Shaun White or Wii Music presentations a little shorter, or have Reggie talk at a normal speed so games like Wario Land, MadWorld, Fatal Frame, Disaster, Soma Bringer, the new Kirby DS game, or many others could be shown? I mean they showed two Star Wars games. Why showcase two of them and leave out so many other worthwhile titles to showcase?

2. Not planning their Fall schedule correctly. Nintendo has a lot of studios and normally has good management. There shouldn't be gaping lineup holes come the Fall. It's not just the Wii, the DS isn't getting much either. How many studios are going behind schedule for Nintendo to have such a wide hole with not a lot to fill it with? I know games are coming, but I don't need them all bunched into 2009. One or two more interesting titles would have been nice to have this Fall.

3. Some people just are never happy with Nintendo, probably don't own Wii's and found this as an excuse to bash them endlessly or wanted to throw mud in the Wii fans that have been saying, "wait till E3 and you'll see the games."

I do not think people were bashing Nintendo for not showing the newly announced games at E3, which include a new game from Team Mario, Team Zelda and Pikmin 3. They were more upset with Nintendo not having much new to show that interested them.

Onto Capcom, that video just plain sucks. Capcom should have known better. Nintendo showed Twilight Princess two and a half years before release and it got a standing ovation and looked incredible. This was a very sloppy video on Capcom's part and they should be ashamed for showing it. I really hope this is not the kind of game they plan to release onto the Wii in a few months, because that wouldn't be fair to anybody wanting this game.

Regarding FFXIII, I don't think anyone believes it's progressing nicely. Everyone here is convinced the game won't see release until 2010 and are at their most pessimistic regarding it's release schedule.

In conclusion, I think you're being too sensitive or you just used the wrong examples to paint your picture with.

Many people just generally hate the Wii and everything it stands for. It is winning the "generation" without the best hardware and the least amount of mature games.

Gamers and gaming magazines do not like at all the aspect of "casual gamers" being considered important in the gaming industry. Some PS360 fans take offense to the Wii's library. They think that somehow the best systems have the highest Metacritic rating averages for their games. No one likes to consider trends that have worked in Nintendo's favor.

I'm not sure what has caused large portions of the industry to predict doom upon Nintendo, but I think I have a clue.

Change.

Nintendo has changed many aspects to the idea of gaming. Getting more outside gamers (women/children/ Sony-neglected senior citizens lol). The DS is weaker than the PSP but is in the hands of outside gamers for all the "hardcore" to see. The last two PSP commercials I saw showed the system with two games: Madden and God of War, before that, Star Wars with the PSP Slim. Doesn't exactly scream girls allowed with those games. The DS commercials have Liv Tyler, Carrie Underwood, Mario & Sonic, Imagine titles (yea I know). Gamers see Ninty catering to all the "wrong" people.

The Wii..... is the smallest, cheapest, least powerful, least customized system on the current-gen market. People have come up with endless reasons as to why it is successful:

Price, casual games, 1st party recognition, rehashing, and profitability.

Out of those 5, Sony and Microsoft only have 2 or three of those in their favor as well. We've all seen the Wii Bingo board and somehow it is perpetually being supported by analysts and biased gamers alike. Madden 09 sells twice as much as Madden 08 did, but Stans jump onto the Hi Hater bandwagon and claim it's a flop, saying legs don't mean squat, which historical trends have proven wrong.

Gamers go up in arms over GTA's 10 ratings but someone always has to be there and say "Yes, it is the best thing since Zebra Cakes and the invention of fire." But when Ocarina of Time is mentioned, "Oh, it was alright. I don't see what the hype was about. Why are people reviewing it 10 years later, lulz, fanboys....." Just like the Final Fantasy series as of late, people starts hating it and Square Enix because it's popular. I CHALLENGE anyone who can say that neither FF or LOZ are good series, especially OOT being one of the (if not THE) greatest games of all time. Try me. Anyways...

Why does the Wii need HD? Why does it have to have a successor because it is not future proof? Why must it come out first next gen? Why do gamers want Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Foz, and Smash Bros. "rehashes" to disappear?

Last time I checked:
Sony built the PS3 to be future proof. Result:
Sony loses $3 billion, most of the money made from the PS2. Development of the Cell proves difficult for some developers.

Microsoft came out first this gen. Result:
RROD hurts the Xbox brandname and the 360 is being outsold by the PS3 slowly.

Sony let go of Crash, Lara Croft, Final Fantasy, Spyro, and other franchises. Result:
Sony fans scramble for a mascot and choose between Kratos the killer and a ragdoll from an unproven game. (I hope to God LBP is good, for gaming's sake.)

PS360 are HD. Result:
Dev costs for gaming have grown very high and one bad game can ruin companies. Games have nothing over the other systems versions, making multiplatform games not even a consideration. Exclusivity begins seeming pointless. Smear interviews and Data spinning comes every month. Games cost $60. The PS3 and Sony are fighting for SECOND place. Systems copy each other and focus less on games and more on media outputs like HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, watching movies and downloading Television shows, while playing games is made to look like an "optional" feature. 7 OUT OF 10 games do not make profit.

From what I can tell, going HD doesn't sound like the road the Wii should be following. Hideo Kojima is acclaimed as a genious (an no doubt he is talented) but Shigeru Miyamoto is made fun of for playing non-Nintendo games, his facial expressions in sigs and pictures, and supposedly making games from "dumb concepts" like REAL LIFE........

Nintendo isn't afraid to resist the demanding needs of gamers and do something different. For that, they get lambasted.

I'm done here.

I am not defending their E3 "showcase" per se. I am defending the choice not to show incomplete footage.  Also, I don't think the audiance was the genreal press not the gaming press. Ironically, if you read the AP general article on E3, Nintendo did fine. But if you read the AP videogame writer's article, it reads like a lot of complaints raised here.

2. Not planning their Fall schedule correctly. Nintendo has a lot of studios and normally has good management. There shouldn't be gaping lineup holes come the Fall. Again, this may be a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. If Nintendo puts out first-party titles, people sale third-party games don't sell. If they leave a time for them to shine, it seems like nothing is coming out.  That being said, they could have held a game back for the holidays -- like Wii Fit. Or it might be that an anticipated game fell through. Remember, Kirby Wii anbd Disaster Day of Crisis were on the early Japan release lists and the former is very late and teh latter is MIA.

3. Some people just are never happy with Nintendo, probably don't own Wii's and found this as an excuse to bash them endlessly or wanted to throw mud in the Wii fans that have been saying, "wait till E3 and you'll see the games."

There is some truth is all of what you say. However, I do know that Nintendo was getting some grief from the gaming press for showing basically the same TP two years in a row.

In conclusion, I think you're being too sensitive or you just used the wrong examples to paint your picture with.

Maybe. But also remember that what I am saying is not based just on what is here but what is found elsewhere. And there are a lot of people who basically find their sport is Wii-bashing (e.g., Game Informer).
