Many people just generally hate the Wii and everything it stands for. It is winning the "generation" without the best hardware and the least amount of mature games.
Gamers and gaming magazines do not like at all the aspect of "casual gamers" being considered important in the gaming industry. Some PS360 fans take offense to the Wii's library. They think that somehow the best systems have the highest Metacritic rating averages for their games. No one likes to consider trends that have worked in Nintendo's favor.
I'm not sure what has caused large portions of the industry to predict doom upon Nintendo, but I think I have a clue.
Change.
Nintendo has changed many aspects to the idea of gaming. Getting more outside gamers (women/children/ Sony-neglected senior citizens lol). The DS is weaker than the PSP but is in the hands of outside gamers for all the "hardcore" to see. The last two PSP commercials I saw showed the system with two games: Madden and God of War, before that, Star Wars with the PSP Slim. Doesn't exactly scream girls allowed with those games. The DS commercials have Liv Tyler, Carrie Underwood, Mario & Sonic, Imagine titles (yea I know). Gamers see Ninty catering to all the "wrong" people.
The Wii..... is the smallest, cheapest, least powerful, least customized system on the current-gen market. People have come up with endless reasons as to why it is successful:
Price, casual games, 1st party recognition, rehashing, and profitability.
Out of those 5, Sony and Microsoft only have 2 or three of those in their favor as well. We've all seen the Wii Bingo board and somehow it is perpetually being supported by analysts and biased gamers alike. Madden 09 sells twice as much as Madden 08 did, but Stans jump onto the Hi Hater bandwagon and claim it's a flop, saying legs don't mean squat, which historical trends have proven wrong.
Gamers go up in arms over GTA's 10 ratings but someone always has to be there and say "Yes, it is the best thing since Zebra Cakes and the invention of fire." But when Ocarina of Time is mentioned, "Oh, it was alright. I don't see what the hype was about. Why are people reviewing it 10 years later, lulz, fanboys....." Just like the Final Fantasy series as of late, people starts hating it and Square Enix because it's popular. I CHALLENGE anyone who can say that neither FF or LOZ are good series, especially OOT being one of the (if not THE) greatest games of all time. Try me. Anyways...
Why does the Wii need HD? Why does it have to have a successor because it is not future proof? Why must it come out first next gen? Why do gamers want Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Foz, and Smash Bros. "rehashes" to disappear?
Last time I checked:
Sony built the PS3 to be future proof. Result:
Sony loses $3 billion, most of the money made from the PS2. Development of the Cell proves difficult for some developers.
Microsoft came out first this gen. Result:
RROD hurts the Xbox brandname and the 360 is being outsold by the PS3 slowly.
Sony let go of Crash, Lara Croft, Final Fantasy, Spyro, and other franchises. Result:
Sony fans scramble for a mascot and choose between Kratos the killer and a ragdoll from an unproven game. (I hope to God LBP is good, for gaming's sake.)
PS360 are HD. Result:
Dev costs for gaming have grown very high and one bad game can ruin companies. Games have nothing over the other systems versions, making multiplatform games not even a consideration. Exclusivity begins seeming pointless. Smear interviews and Data spinning comes every month. Games cost $60. The PS3 and Sony are fighting for SECOND place. Systems copy each other and focus less on games and more on media outputs like HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, watching movies and downloading Television shows, while playing games is made to look like an "optional" feature. 7 OUT OF 10 games do not make profit.
From what I can tell, going HD doesn't sound like the road the Wii should be following. Hideo Kojima is acclaimed as a genious (an no doubt he is talented) but Shigeru Miyamoto is made fun of for playing non-Nintendo games, his facial expressions in sigs and pictures, and supposedly making games from "dumb concepts" like REAL LIFE........
Nintendo isn't afraid to resist the demanding needs of gamers and do something different. For that, they get lambasted.
I'm done here.
