I'm not sure if people really like the character, but people like the games.
The thing is that the name "Mario" is associated with fun game.
If Nintendo has made Mario Galaxy without Mario, let's call it Ratchet Galaxy (yea... I know... I lack of ideas), it would have sold a lot less.
Nintendo make good games. In order to sell it well, they build them around the mario character. The mario character is associated to good games. Etc...
As much as I don't like it, Mario can't retire.
They will know Helgan belongs to Helghasts
