It looks like a rental I have seen mixed reviews on this game. Gamepro only gave the game 7 out of 10 and said it is for JRPG nuts only. I guess that basically alienates a lot of people from the game.

Wow, an uber Sony fan finds the least positive review, and calls it a rental. Shock and awe.

Congratulations, though, you're the first Sony fan to attempt to marginalize this game in this thread, since all the reviews were resoundingly positive, except of course the one you dug up, which was only marginally positive.

On a lighter note, good luck on your prediction that the PS3 will outsell the 360 by the end of the year, worldwide.

I believe you said:

Gamepro isn't a very reliable reviewer since they generally rate game a little too low or a little too high

They're alright. The review is a 3.5/5. Really short, says it's the best game in the series, ect. Same as the other reviews, just lower numerical score.

Gamepro - 3.5/5 http://www.gamepro.com/article/reviews/206882/tales-of-vesperia/

Tales of Vesperia is a fairly straightforward Japanese RPG, which isn't a bad thing at all. Sure, it's clich?d and it doesn't reinvent the wheel. I'm not telling you to run out and buy it as the next big innovation in role playing, though; I'm saying if you have a soft spot in your heart for RPG games and you liked the other Tales titles, then this is a pretty safe bet for you.

Interesting note, this is also the first female reviewer. I've added it.

As KZ2 can see, even the worst review so far recommends a purchase to Tales fans.

...and the other reviewers mostly agree it's the best jrpg so far this gen, and the best in the Tales series, with an average of 60 hours worth of gameplay, so totally a rental, right KZ? I mean, all those "mixed" reviews, you never know. Right?

Yeah, I've just recently left lurker status on these boards, and KZ2 marginalizing any good 360 game comes as absolutely no surprise.

I was very disappointed though as I really thought this game was out yesterday.  Was all happy going to pick up TW '09 and Tales, just to find out that A) My local gamestop employees are a little dumb (they told me Tales would be released December...) and B) when I got home the automated gamestop service had called to tell me it would be in the store today.

Can't wait to play this though, I will admit to never playing a Tales game before, and even though the demo didn't turn me on at all (lack of good documentation made combat confusing) all previews and now reviews have me honestly excited to try this out.

Its always painful to see someone fall foul of the wrath of Zen.

I know from personal experience

Yeah, a lot of people just say whatever they can to try and flame other people's enjoyment, and promote their own fanboy agenda. Didn't think we'd have any on this post, but I just think that guy probably hadn't read the OP, or any post up to that point. Trolls usually don't read the topic past the title. They don't need to, in order to accomplish their goals.

Anyway, enough of that unpleasantness. I ordered the game myself, and it should be in, after a few days. I'm already gonna tell you, off hype alone, and after reading the IGN and Gamespot reviews, I am gonna love the game no matter what, lol. If somehow it sucked, I'd still love it at this point. I am officially hyped.

Whenever Gametrailers puts their review up, I'll probably stop updating the OP. It'd get to long if I just keep going, and everyone can check out metacritic.

I think this post did a great job at what it was supposed to do. Get the word out fast to interested members on the pros and cons of the game, while building hype about the game for those excited about it, and preventing the focus from moving away from the game, into fanboy wars, and attempting to marginalize and rub in faux dissapointment, like these topics usually turn into.

I think the great reviews helped out a lot, but also the community helped. The PS3 fans, mostly, and all the Wii fans were really cool about letting this topic go down as a hype and discussion thread about the game, without marginalizing or flaming.

I certainly do appreciate several members who posted very intelligent and intersting posts on this thread, who ordinarily would take the side of Sony. I have gained respect for many posters on this topic.

Watched the Gamespot review, and it definitely looks like they wanted to give it a 95% since they had so little to say that was wrong. It almost sounds like a perfect jRPG from that review.

Unfortunately, public bias comes into play on the reviews of these games. I think they are afraid of the repercussions that would result if they gave it the score it deserves. 90% of the public in the West won't touch a cel-shaded jRPG. If they say it's as good as Gears, Mass Effect, MGS, or FF, they will get a bunch of angry people that bought it on review that simply don't like the genre. That's my opinion of the issue.

I said that exact same thing on Soriku's wall.

Reviewers see Tales as a guilty pleasure. There is nothing special about the game, besides the fact that it has great anime characters, with aged but fun gameplay.

However, the game is just plain fun, and you really can't stop yourself from wishing it would go on forever.

Reviewers feel they would lose credibility for giving a guilty pleasure anime based game like this, that has been done many times before, a AAA rating, right up there with the super-evolved neo-juggernauts like Gears of War.

So, they give it an 8/10 or an 8.5 and rave about how much fun it is in the review article, and how everyone should pick it up.

It's 60 hours of sheer joy, and a lot of these reviewers obviously recount it as one of their favorite HD games. But in their eyes, their "favorite" game doesn't make it the "best" game, and giving points for doing new things, instead of rehashing old, proven, fun ones, has been a standard in the review industry for quite a while.

So people now agree that PS360 games can be "fun". I'm glad for the changing attitude. I thought the wii had completely hogged the term.

lol, yeah, I shouldn't let guys like that get to me, but sometimes if feels like I'm a shovel trying to hold back the ocean.

If I get a little worked up, sometimes, you'll have to forgive me. I was born a little high-strung.

That said, in this case, I feel my comments were completely called for, or I would delete them.

Did I say "fun?" I meant "intense if you have a HDTV and a surround system."

I don't know if this is a complaint per se, but I have found that in games that use cel-shading instead of "realistic" 3D graphics, I find myself a bit more withdrawn from the characters and story.(especially the former) This is a more recent of a development obviously since RPG's didn't always have the graphics they do now. But for the last couple/few years, the stories that I found myself most engrossed in were games like Final Fantasy X, Xenosaga and Kingdom Hearts. (to name a few) I still loved games like Rogue Galaxy and Dark Cloud 2 etc., but I was less into the story. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the stories and they weren't good, but it wasn't quite the same. This could just be coincidence however. It's not like I have something against Cel-Shading or a bias against it, it's just something i've noticed.

This is kind of odd since i'm a big fan of Anime Film, specifically its storytelling.

I know exactly what you mean. The 2 games you've mentioned are developed by the same studio. Level-5. Both games have very poor character development, and minimal story. Like Dragonquest VIII, also by the same developer. Unfortunately, I too disliked Rogue Galaxy and Dragonquest VIII. I did enjoy Dark Cloud 2, but for an entirely different reason(the characters and story sucked). It's not a coincidence, you just didn't realize that all the cell shaded rpgs you've played are by the same developer, lol.

If you have never played a Tales game, trust me, they are NOTHING like Rogue Galaxy, Suikoden, Dragonquest, or Dark Cloud. You can virtually guarntee that if you like anime, you're gonna find the game intriguing and become emotionally invested with the characters. That's the main point of the game, of which all else is focused.

I knew Dark Cloud 1/2 and Rogue Galaxy were both Level 5, but I forgot DQVIII was. Another game that falls into this category of "i liked it, but not because of the story" was Radiata Stories and I believe that is a Tri-Ace/SE Project.

The only Tales games I've played are Phantasia for SNES and Symphonia for the Gamecube, both of which I really liked. I'm going to grab Legendia and Abyss of Ebay at some point.

I actually like some of the stories in Suikoden, especially Suikoden 2 and 5.

I'm really looking forward to this game coming to mine and other PAL regions. IN TWO THOUSAND AND NINE!!!!

I think Developers should take that Silverchair song "anthem for the year 2000" and get Silverchair to re-record it with an 9/10/11 on the end so they can play it whenever they delay PAL release for a year.
