Watched the Gamespot review, and it definitely looks like they wanted to give it a 95% since they had so little to say that was wrong. It almost sounds like a perfect jRPG from that review.

Unfortunately, public bias comes into play on the reviews of these games. I think they are afraid of the repercussions that would result if they gave it the score it deserves. 90% of the public in the West won't touch a cel-shaded jRPG. If they say it's as good as Gears, Mass Effect, MGS, or FF, they will get a bunch of angry people that bought it on review that simply don't like the genre. That's my opinion of the issue.

I said that exact same thing on Soriku's wall.

Reviewers see Tales as a guilty pleasure. There is nothing special about the game, besides the fact that it has great anime characters, with aged but fun gameplay.

However, the game is just plain fun, and you really can't stop yourself from wishing it would go on forever.

Reviewers feel they would lose credibility for giving a guilty pleasure anime based game like this, that has been done many times before, a AAA rating, right up there with the super-evolved neo-juggernauts like Gears of War.

So, they give it an 8/10 or an 8.5 and rave about how much fun it is in the review article, and how everyone should pick it up.

It's 60 hours of sheer joy, and a lot of these reviewers obviously recount it as one of their favorite HD games. But in their eyes, their "favorite" game doesn't make it the "best" game, and giving points for doing new things, instead of rehashing old, proven, fun ones, has been a standard in the review industry for quite a while.

So people now agree that PS360 games can be "fun". I'm glad for the changing attitude. I thought the wii had completely hogged the term.
