Forums - Nintendo - A thank you letter to Nintendo for the Virtual Console

Dear Nintendo,

Thank you for finally remembering to have a competent Virtual Console release in the U.S. for the first time in, oh, a year or so. With Ys I+II (the Turbo Grafx version, no less!) you have now mostly redeemed yourself; Samurai Showdown II is just delicious icing on top of a very sweet cake. I look forward to shovelling an hour of my labor at you so that I may replay two long-last classics which I once believed I could never touch again. Thank you also for letting an entire new generation begin playing these awesome games, as they both deserve such an audience. And while I am hesitant to once again broach the topic, I must ask that you please come up with a storage solution soon, so that I may continue to have the privilege of giving you my money, as these two games will eliminate all but a dozen blocks in my fridge.

Thank you Nintendo, for your Virtual Console has finally made me smile.

With gratitude and joy,

Noname 2200.

P.S. I'd also pay for Elite Beat Agents 2. Just saying.

The power of (my) nostalgia compels you! The power of (my) nostalgia compels you!

Ys is an old action/adventure game that's a bit hard to describe, and that sounds lame when told but which works well in practice. The newer games are a bit different, but in this one you control a swordsman in a 3/4 perspective, and you fight monsters. The twist is that you don't need to press a button to use your sword: you simply run into the enemy. Complicating mattters is that how you run into the enemy determines the outcome: if you run into it straight on and it is stronger than you, you take damage and it goes unscathed. If you hit it at a slight angle, you deal damage. The following shows what I mean.

Apart from that, it's a fairly straightforward game with some great boss fights. It also (and this cannot be emphasized enough) has some of the best music in video gaming, especially the Turbo-Grafx version. Long story short, you'll be paying 8 bucks for two great games and a legendary soundtrack. If it had cost twenty-plus I'd be more hesitant to recommend it to newcomers, as the series is not for everyone ("old school" is a decent description in some ways), but at this price I can confidently say that there's not much to lose.

It's an action-RPG where you run into enemies to do damage to them, sort of like a real-time Rogue-like. Book 1 & 2 on the TG-CD seamlessly combines the first two games, and has CD-quality audio and professional voice acting by none other than Michael Bell (Raziel from Legacy of Kain), Jim Cummings (Minsc from Baldur's Gate 2), and Thomas Haden Church (Sandman from the Spider-Man 3 movie), among others. I've never played it, but that alone will probably convince me to download it eventually.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

You should only send correspondance to Nintendo if you're going to complain about the lack of external storage. And you noted that. Good job.

That company needs to be spammed with angry and disgruntled mailings until an external harddrive is actually sitting next to our Wii systems.

*hit by power of nostalgia*

It doesn't work! I am invisibile!! Muahahaha~!!

Ok, this sounds interesting so far, after buying Sin and Punishment there is 800 points left on my account.

Is there a better alternative RPG on the VC for 800 points? if not I might grab it.

Hmm, depends on your tastes. Actraiser is 800 points and is a fairly unique adventure/RPG/Sim hybrid, but it's definitely less RPG than most titles, and you probably already own it. I enjoyed Breath of Fire II a lot, although it's been a decade since I last played it, so it may have aged considerably since then. Shining Force is a good SRPG, although it's inferior to its sequel in every way. Landstalker is a great action RPG, but be warned that it can get a bit tough. Those are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head, although I'm sure others will be willing to contribute other choices at that price range.

The only games I would like to see on the VC is the 2 greatest games ever made by Enix, and 1 of the series happens to be in noname2200's sig (on a side note, the better one isn't in his sig).

Alright, now I'm intrigued. Are you going with the mainstream like Dragon Quest here, or something more indie a la Robotrek or the Soul Blazer trilogy?
