Forums - Sales - Why people say GeOW2 will be a system seller?

dbot -

It means that if Playstation 3 fans argue, and assume that lesser-selling titles such as Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 can move consoles, then why not a game that is much better rated, and better selling? Gears 1 outsold Resistance and Killzone combined.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I agree with gebx this commercial is a system seller. :)

The awesome thing is there is no cgi in Gears of War 2, although this is not gameplay it's running on the gameplay engine. Just wow, the cutscenes will look pheneminal. I cant wait. Loads of backstory and a longer game is promised. BRING IT ON.

mrstickball - It seems like a defensive comment to a fair question.  The op is curious as to why people think the GeoW2 will push consoles.  It has nothing to do with Sony, Resistance 2, or Killzone 2.

I think Gears of War 2 will be a great game that will sell very well, but I don't see it moving a lot of hardware for reasons previously stated.  It is a sequel to a game already released on the 360 and Gears 1/Halo 3 have already brought in the FPS crowd.  That being said, I don't see KZ2 or Resistance 2 selling any hardware either.  But I expect both to be good games.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Interesting that the assumption in the op is that the 360 HAS over-saturated the shooter market so Gears 2 wont have a big system sales impact but the PS3 HAS NOT and so KZ2 and Resistance 2 will be system sellers.

I think that is a very convenient argument that is well IMO, flawed. I'm just not sure where you got your statistics that show that every shooter fan who wants a 360 has one, where as every shooter fan who wants a PS3, does not have a PS3.

I'd venture to guess you don't have statistics that prove that though, and that this is just your feeling of the market. I can understand that though, as sales prognostication, particularly on forums is really a "feel" art, however I respectfully disagree with that assumption and therefore do posit that Gears will move systems. To what extent, I'm unsure, but do expect there be a hardware spike when Gears 2 is released, particularly if there is hardware price reduction in place at that time.

Actually, I didn't say anything about shooter fans and whether the PS3 is saturated.

My main point was that it will cause a temporary bump in h/w sales, but not long term.  The pricecut will probably do more for that.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

On its own GEOW2 could move some hardware but Fable 2 and possibly Banjo 3 will move more. Now Gears 2 is bundled, than it could sell a fair amount. Very few sequels have broken the trend of not selling a lot of consoles when both games are released in the same gen.

Yeah, the point is that a second game in a franchise can push consoles... Which is untrue.

A few will be pushed, but the second game is the same as the first, if you didn't like the first, you won't like the second. That applies to any game, in general, sequels of games, are just like the games before, if you didn't like them you won't like the sequel and vice versa.

The only time that sequels push consoles is when they jump consoles. Like Halo 3 pushing consoles since it was the first on the 360. And MGS4 pushing consoles, etc.

Fable 2 biggest system seller on any system these holidays confirmed?

Win by default again?

There are not any returning franchise for the big three coming this holiday that had their last itenerations on a Last-gen console.

PS3 - none

Wii - none

360 - Fable 2. Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts

So yes, it's a victory for the biggest system seller, though hollow, as it won't push many systems, comprable to what MGS4 pushed or Halo 3 pushed.  If you said "System seller of the year", that'd go to MK Wii or Brawl.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

I don't see it moving a lot of consoles because like you said, I think the FPS community is already established on 360..it will move some though, but like I said of the PS3 - I think the overall lineup between now and christmas is what will sell consoles, not particularly any one game.
