Seeing as how Sony has lost more money on the PS3 than they made on the PS1 and PS2 combined, I would have to agree with that. It will some day "make money" but not anywhere close to the extent that it lost money.

Errr... no.

The PS3 has lost the amount of money that they made during the PS2 era, give or take a few million.

It hasn't lost PS1 money yet.

I can't find the thread, but they've *only* lost 3.2 billion (Sounds so weird using only and 3.2 billion in one sentence) on the PS3, and they made almost that during the PS2 era.

The 2 billion or so the PS1 made is still here.

Mostly right. It's lost more than the PS2 made in its lifetime (including to date) and has therefore taken a bite of the PlayStation's profits, but it has a way to go before it goes through all of the latter. It'll probably take a few more small nibbles this year, before the PS3 starts breaking even.

Unfortunately that graph (while still incredibly valuable!) includes figures for the PSP as well, so it's not completely trustworthy for our discussion. Nonetheless, it forms a great base to continue on.

So what about when they start selling it at cost, or at a gain?

They still won't overcome their ENORMOUS losses.

Even if they never make their money back directly from the gaming business, the PS3 won the HD format war for Blu Ray. They will easily, indirectly make their money back that way.

Sony only receives a portion of Blu-Ray royalties, split between something like a dozen companies.  With increasing competition from downloads (particularly high-profile services like Xbox Live (and hell, the PSN)) not to mention the momentous dominance of DVD, the use of words such as the ones I bolded is a little superfluous.

Microsoft Lost $6,369,000,000 off of their gaimng division? Damn that's even worse then I though.

If Sony has no chance of making trhe PS3 break even, then doesn't that also mean that the Microsoft gaming Division will never turn a profit.

The Xbox 360 is now officially making money per console.  So no, that's not what that means.

I believe he's talking about the very, very long-term. If you grant that the PS3 is solely, or even primarily responsible for Blu-Ray's victory (I do not, as I feel the purchasing of studio exclusivity played a larger role, but that's off-topic), and if you grant that Blu-Ray will enjoy as lengthy a lifetime as, say, VHS, then it is all but certain that Sony's slice of the Blu-Ray pie will recoup a measly $3 billion over the course of a decade or two.

Of course, as you pointed out, the degree to which Blu-Ray will dominate remains an open question. I personally feel that the High Definition physical media area will be exclusively Blu-Ray's, but that digital distribution will become large enough that Blu-Ray will be left with the whole of a smaller pie. Still, it's conceivable that Blu-Ray will gain enough market share to justify its existence; time will tell either way soon enough.

Edit: @ Dominicator: actually, that may well be exactly what it means. $6 billion+ is a massive hole to pull yourself out of; even if Microsoft began enjoying Nintendo-level profits this very second, it would take years to recoup its losses. If Microsoft plans ahead to maximize profits from here on out, and stays in the gaming business to the same degree it is now, it may become profitable within the decade. But neither of those conditions is certain as of yet.

But will they ever manage to make back the $6,369,000,000 they lost. They definetly won't be doing that this gen and maybe not even next gen.

The only company that seemed to do really well is Nintendo who apaprently has never lost money off their gaming systems.

The movie business is much bigger than the gaming business. They don't need DVD success to make massive $$$. Sony get royalties for every Blu Ray movie sold. Because of the PS3, when you think HD you automatically think Sony. So when you are looking to buy a new HDTV or Blu Ray player, you are more likely to buy a sony product.

Remember Sony sold the PS2 at a loss (obviously nowhere near the loss of the PS3) and still made billions from royalties from software. The same will happen with Blu Ray Disc loyalties.

They have lost 3.2 billion over the past 2 fiscal years... that includes PS2 profit (huge), PSP profit (some) and PS3 software profit (unsure)

They may not, but they can afford it.  Sony can't.  People seem to forget the dire straits that Sony was in on the whole before the PS3 hype kicked in.  The new execs were cutting products left and right and revamping like crazy.  I think Sony is in more trouble financially than they let on at the moment.  The main problem in the past has been that different divisions of Sony in different parts of the world can't seem to communicate well or agree on how to run the company.  That may be fixed now, but the PS3, so far, is another product that they can't seem to make money on.
