Even if they never make their money back directly from the gaming business, the PS3 won the HD format war for Blu Ray. They will easily, indirectly make their money back that way.

Sony only receives a portion of Blu-Ray royalties, split between something like a dozen companies.  With increasing competition from downloads (particularly high-profile services like Xbox Live (and hell, the PSN)) not to mention the momentous dominance of DVD, the use of words such as the ones I bolded is a little superfluous.

The movie business is much bigger than the gaming business. They don't need DVD success to make massive $$$. Sony get royalties for every Blu Ray movie sold. Because of the PS3, when you think HD you automatically think Sony. So when you are looking to buy a new HDTV or Blu Ray player, you are more likely to buy a sony product.

Remember Sony sold the PS2 at a loss (obviously nowhere near the loss of the PS3) and still made billions from royalties from software. The same will happen with Blu Ray Disc loyalties.
