Forums - Sony - New PS3 may already be using 65/65 chipset

http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/23/new-80gb-playstation-3-provides-minimal-power-savings-might-hav/

So I guess its already (possibly) using the 65 cell and 65 RSX. Wonder how much money Sony saves on this particular SKU, in comparison to the 40gb model. Next stop, 45/65, and perhaps a $299 price point by at least next summer.

I hope some one soon cracks open the new 80GB PS3 so we can have 100% confirmation weather on not the new PS3 has the 65nm RSX.

I would hope the new 80GB had the new chipset in it. They said they would have it buy the end of the year back when Kaz announced the VOD, and LWP services. So unless they are planning another Sku before the year is I would say it is safe to assume the 80/160 both have the new chips.

Just because I think this is cool. I am posting this from the web browser in Ratchet and Clanck:Q4B. I hope we see some games allow for XBM Net browesing In-Game.

Great news for PS3 with the new chips. This means a price cut is on the horizon. Cheaper manufacturing costs of PS3 will result in a price cut for Ps3.

I doubt there will be an immediate price cut. Sony wants the PS3 unit to be profitable so this new chipset savings will probably mostly just go into the reduce loss per unit sold column. My guess is that a pricecut will probably first happen with the next generation of SKU's unless the PS3 suddenly has a lot of trouble in the marketplace again. The price of a PS3 is not so daunting anymore anyways, I think with all the killer titles lined up for fall and the increasing popularity of Blu-Ray, Sony will have little trouble selling PS3's even without a price cut.

Ahh i wish we could get confirmation of this. Also i hope its true -- i mean the lower PS3 production costs the better it is for consumers. ( Due to SONY being able to cut prices, remain competitive and generate profit which will will go into more games develop )

We really need official confirmation....but it sounds good

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

i wonder what it costs sony to do manufacture them now, assuming they have the new chips in

@obieslut -- I'm guessing that the 65nm RSX would result in a saving of $15 - $20. Which isn't much on its own, but the smaller chip should lead to cost cutting in other area's such as the cooling system, Motherboard, Power supply and eventually console size.

Would Sony drop price during November again? I doubt they would do that again, since a huge number of people will be buying a PS3 in October for the releases during that month. If this is a move to drop the PS3 price, even by $50, I think we will see it in correspondence with little big planets release.

Sony is set to see a HUGE holiday season, a PS3 price drop could make it even bigger.
