Forums - Gaming - PS3 Backward Compatibility Coming back via SOFTWARE!! HOLY CRAP CONFIRMED

Reeves explained the new downward compatibility to PS2-Singstar titles in more detail. It will be realized with a software emulation which is contained in a coming firmware update. With this, all PS2-Singstar episodes would be directly playable on the PS3. There is no need for a PS3-Singstar. "We will observe for which titles this would also pay off, and in the future we will possibly get other PS2-games to run on PS3 by emulation." This is however a technically very complex process, since the necessary PS2-chips are missing in the current PS3-models."

I´m german and this translation is correct. So basically the only confirmed thing is that PS2-Singstar episodes will be "natively" playable on PS3 via firmware update, nothing more.

They might make other games playable as well, but this is just a possibility. There is no confirmation of any other titles at all. To state that this is fully backward compatibility is just nonsense.

I just need to be able to play MGS2+3, GoW1+2 and Fahrenheit.
I don't care about any of the other games, and knowing Sony, these are probably games that will get attention for their BC project :D

thats awesome its meen that i can sell my ps2 and have money to buy other ps3 games

Well it's about time.

I feel compelled to defend myself on a couple of fronts.

It is also how it appears to be reported elsewhere:

I have not seen any story say that this was anything more than a way to let people play their tracks from the PS2 on their PS3 -- even if the PS3 was not BC. It is essentally what Rock Band 2 will let owners of Rock Band 1 do.

Also, I would be very leery of relying on Google translation for the news because this seems to be the only place saying that you won't need PS3 Singstar.

Taking the leap that this is the beginning of a new BC for Sony is a great leap of faith. Sony may have that up their sleeve and it may be coming. But it is doubtful that it will seen until its PS2 cash cow stops selling. And that may not be until the PS4 arrives.

Well, everyone's just ignoring posts like these...

This blog entry has nothing to with software BC.

Its saying that the PS3 version of SingStar can read song tracks from the PS2 DVDs.

That's all.

Since the PS3 can already ready DVDs natively, and they are nothing but encoded data discs which software emulation (of the EE) is already able to read...

This blog post has absolutely nothing to do with software BC of PS2 games -- just game data. There's a pretty big difference.

Software BC would allow Sony to offer PS2 titles as DLC (which could make Sony a lot of money), so they may very well be working on it (emulation of the GS was the only remaining issue of the current emulation, as I understand it).  But the information presented here has nothing to do with its progress.  It's merely a statement about how the PS3 version of SingStar is cool enough to read old PS2 SingStar tracks off PS2 SingStar DVD discs.  Great for longtime SingStar fans... but this is not "real" software BC... not even close.

Even if it's true, 360esque "BC" = fail. Inevitably good games or even popular games are left out. Since Sony can provide plenty of options with different size hard drives and all, why the hell can't they provide a real BC option for those of us who care? With PS1 and PS2 being the least-reliable systems ever produced, BC is more important than you think...maybe not to the average consumer, but definitely to those of us who don't only play Madden and GTA.

I'm glad some of you can also read german because in that article nowhere is BC confirmed.. except for Singstar..

Pretty pointless in my opinion. Sony's big line at E3 was "we still have 100 million PS2 owners that haven't upgraded to the PS3 so we aren't worried". Sure giving BC/updating the systems is always a good thing, but wouldn't those 100 million already own a PS2 and therefore have no need for a PS2 BC PS3?

I'm one of those people (40gb PS3 with PS2) and what do I want from sony? my PS3 to be able to play ALL PS1 games. My PS2 for some reason doesn't play PS1 games no more, so I've got a stack of PS1 games that I can't play. All PS2 BC gives me is the chance to play my PS2 games stretched out on a big screen. Pointless.

What this shows me is that Sony may not be so sure that all those PS2 owners will upgrade to a PS3 now, because if they were they'd spend more time on giving us something PS2 and PS3 owners don't have.

PS1 games should work.
