Forums - Microsoft - GTAIV DLC Rumored To Be Huge And Cost 1600 MS Points

You only need a hard drive if you want to play online. Otherwise you can still download arcade games and such. To casual gamers, it is sufficient.

So casual gamers won't buy the DLC?

Luckily though the arcade is only around 10% of the 360 market. but who knows what it will be after the price cut.

MS could be losing a lot of DLC sales with this strategy, it might even sting them a little in the long run, not only with this title, but any with DLC

And for the record, the 60GB hard drive will be available in the Starter Pack($99) and it comes with several other things as well. It is the equivalent of purchasing the Pro, only they can do it in steps.

Of course most casual gamers wont get the DLC. In most cases they won't even know it exists. I wouldn't leave it to chance for Microsoft to be targeting people for nonsense like that. The DLC is for the gamers who already purchased GTA IV. Yes...the ones who purchased over 5.83 Million copies for the 360.

either that starter pack, or the 60gb 360 is stupid. and arcade 360 costs $199, and the starter pack costs $99. buying those 2, you get what you would get in a 60gb 360 PLUS 3 months of live. what's the point in getting a 60gb 360 pack?

The 360 isn't the Wii. $200 for an HD console is a great incentive for anyone who couldn't get it before hand. When they go to gamestop they could probably trade in a couple of games a pick up a 20 GB Hard drive or if they have the cash thats fine too. A $200 price tag isn't what lures casual people (or average consumers as you put it), it's the playability of the system and obviously the Wii has that lure to mass demographics. The 360's price tag is a lure for the gamers who want an HD system but cannot afford it over $300 (IE: The 60% of people who purchased PS2's after the first three years were those people).

Also, who said the people who buy a new 360 arcade will need to buy GTA immediately? Consumers who are frugal and are patient waiters tend to to buy Platinum hits/Greatest hits or just purchase used games. For people like that GTA can wait.

Personally, like i've said I'd go for the 360 Elite. I'll get flamed for this I know, but the Wii does not interest me.

The problem is, there are a lot of parents out there who are going to buy a 360 for their kids, especially now that the price has dropped. Some of these kids would presumably like to be like the cool kids and play GTA4, the parents fork out (or the kid buys it with its own money whatever). now the cool kids get the DLC. The uncool kids now want the DLC. The parents who bought the console now feel annoyed that for this DLC, they'll have to fork out another $100 in addition to the price of the DLC.

This is not just for GTA4 but any game with DLC that would need a HDD.

As wonderfully priced this Arcade will, it's a trap to get these parents to pay more than they origionally intended, otherwise they would have bought the pro or elite first up if they knew the limitations imposed on the console that has no HDD out of the box. I know it would annoy me and sure others will feel the same.

You do not need the hard drive to play any of the games.(Except the Final Fantasy game that is online).

I'm starting to realize that your understanding how things work in the real world. The Elite is a system only the hardcore or the wealthier fans would only take notice to purchase. This is why Elites were shipped out in small quantities compared to the typical 360 models. The majority of consumers who cannot purchase a system past $300 will obviously go for the Aracade and build upon their experience little by little from there, purchasing the old games to get the experience. Not everyone is easily persuaded to buy a system they in most cases based on actually money they have, they cannot afford.

As for parents, we're not talking about just parents. We're talking about people who make money themselves and want systems for themselves. The average gamer is around their mid 20-early 30's. I doubt they are asking their parents for money.  It's parents who don't give a damn about what their kids play as long as they shut up that will buy their kids games like GTA.

I know that, but that's not my point. my point is that they'll need a HDD for the DLC (even patches?) for the games they can play.

Obviously not everyone (the casuals) will want the extra content, but some would be annoyed that they have to pay $100 more to get the content to get the most out of their game if they want it(Live charges are not being factored in). If this trend of mega downloads continues, MS should discontinue the Arcade model.

But they won't - they're making too much cash out of the people wanting to upgrade from the Arcade.

I hope you're right, because otherwise MS is doing themselves and their customers a disservice.

Luckily for them as I've said before, the casual (Arcade buyer) market is only around 10% of 360's out there. or are my numbers wrong?

The 360 and PS3 will never fully attain the casual market. They need to go after the people who cannot afford the PS3's and 360's that are frugal gamers. Those people accounted for over 60% of the PS2's sales after the first 3 years and the price drop occured.
