When they go to gamestop they could probably trade in a couple of games a pick up a 20 GB Hard drive or if they have the cash thats fine too. A $200 price tag isn't what lures casual people (or average consumers as you put it), it's the playability of the system and obviously the Wii has that lure to mass demographics. The 360's price tag is a lure for the gamers who want an HD system but cannot afford it over $300 (IE: The 60% of people who purchased PS2's after the first three years were those people). Also, who said the people who buy a new 360 arcade will need to buy GTA immediately? Consumers who are frugal and are patient waiters tend to to buy Platinum hits/Greatest hits or just purchase used games. For people like that GTA can wait. |
Personally, like i've said I'd go for the 360 Elite. I'll get flamed for this I know, but the Wii does not interest me.
The problem is, there are a lot of parents out there who are going to buy a 360 for their kids, especially now that the price has dropped. Some of these kids would presumably like to be like the cool kids and play GTA4, the parents fork out (or the kid buys it with its own money whatever). now the cool kids get the DLC. The uncool kids now want the DLC. The parents who bought the console now feel annoyed that for this DLC, they'll have to fork out another $100 in addition to the price of the DLC.
This is not just for GTA4 but any game with DLC that would need a HDD.
As wonderfully priced this Arcade will, it's a trap to get these parents to pay more than they origionally intended, otherwise they would have bought the pro or elite first up if they knew the limitations imposed on the console that has no HDD out of the box. I know it would annoy me and sure others will feel the same.
