Oh, and the prediction COULD come true... it's not that difficult, generally consoles sell rouhgly the same in the last 4 months as they do in the first 8 months... my bet would be 6-6.5 million total for the year. (in "others")

So because Sony says they are only shipping 10 million consoles you are going to ignore reality right now. The PS3 has already sold 6,000,000 consoles this year. Unless something catastrophic happens they are going to sell more than they did last year this holiday season, not less or equal.

Better value, better games does not equal less sales. This year has been proof of that for Sony. I'd say, realistically, 6-8 million is a realistic number for this holiday season because of supply. That puts the PS3 at 12-14 million on the year.

So wait a minute, you think the PS3 will only sell 500,000 more this year than last year during the holiday season?

Last year the PS3 through September sold 3,300,000 units. This year they have sold over 6,000,000 units.

Coming off a year like that you really think that from November to the end of the year they will only sell 500,000 more units than last year!? HUH?

Then, from beginning of September to the end of October the PS3 only averaged 114,000 a week. In October this year, LBP is going to be released, and retailers will start pushing Blu-Ray more heavily (meaning more PS3 sales). Considering past data and compeltely ignoring current data, sure, I could see how you could come up with 4,000,000 sales. Lol.

If you want the way I come to these numbers, its like this. The PS3 should sell 225,000-275,000 per week average between September and October. (October is basically the biggest month for video games in a lot of ways, including LBP and Rock Band 2 on the PS3.) This was the lowest most disappointing part of the PS3 sales last year and they still sold 1,000,000+ in this period.

That would put the PS3 at 2,000,000 consoles for those 2 months. Then during the holiday season, seeing as it sold 3.5million last year (according to jman) I can see the PS3 hitting 5-5.5million in those two months.

That would equate to 7-8 million for those months, and 13-14 million for the year.

Am I pulling any impossible numbers from anywhere considering what happened last year?

@jandre: if sony had 10 million as their goal, maybe they were aiming at producing that much for the year, and since PS3 is selling way better than last year, this holiday season may prove PS3 to be supply constrained because they were limiting production to protect themselves if PS3s did not start selling well... (we already saw some of that in the past few weeks that Ps3s were scarce.... taking that into consideration they might have upped production, but as is proved by Nintendo, upping production is not as easy as turning a switch on. Thus giving us a less than optimal holiday season with sales for the last 4 months not quite as high as the sales for the first 8...

@OP, that's what they trying to tell you, you should compare PS3's 2008 with PS2's 2002 and not with 2001... You should compare PS3's 2007 with PS2's 2001, as both were still taking off at that time,

the ps2 never did 8mil in other ever, or i think it did one year i am not to sure, the ps3 will do 8 mil in one year but i dont think it will be this year though, i think it could be but by looking at the sales data from last year this year and trend it wouldbe around a little higher then what i predicted, about mid 7 mill

lets see ps2 sales were under 6 million, just after launch, and supply contraint. hhmmm this thread is so full of fail. im sorry but its the truth.
