Forums - Nintendo - Oh the Nintendo/Sega Irony

Anyone else find this ironic?

Nintendo and SEGA declare war on each other in 4th generation

Nintendo backstabs Sony for Philips for SNES CD-addon

Sony becomes console manufacturer in 5th generation

Playstation 1 becomes market leader and leaves N64 and Saturn fighting for second.

SEGA releases Dreamcast as the first console of the 6th generation

Playstation 2 destroys Dreamcast and SEGA becomes third party developer

Now, in 7th generation, SEGA supports Nintendo Wii as relations between the two improve

I find it ironic that Nintendo laid the seeds to Sega's console destruction but now Sega is one of few third-parties that are bringing exclusive titles on the Wii of some quality.

Pixel Art can be fun.

it's business nothing personal as they would say. After all they both suffered at the hands of Sony. NINTY has only done well this gen after what the damage the ps1 and ps2 done.

Sega will go where the money is being a 3rd party developer and at the moment there is a lot of money sitting with the WII and DS. Easy and cheap to develop for and money to be made. Why would they say no?

I wouldn't say irony, i would say good business strategy.

Your logic train is a bit flawed, though: as Nintendo proved in the fifth and sixth generations, a properly run company can still get a good profit out of second or third place. Thus, the failure of Sega to survive after that era can only be blamed on Sega itself, and not on any other company.

As to the rest of your thesis, though, I would add that war and business makes strange bedfellows. You might, for instance, remark on the irony of Squaresoft avoiding bankruptcy primarily by the aid of Sony after their first Final Fantasy movie, only to have Square-Enix supporting the DS much more than Sony's own PSP (of the XIII "betrayal-ton" we shall say nothing here).

All that said, Samba de Amigo's gonna rock. That is all.

Thanks to that irony, it seems that the third party developer/publisher that understands Wii the most is SEGA. In the past, both were integrated hardware/software companies focused in gaming, this is strenght that Sony and Microsoft don't have.

I see what you're saying.  I'm saying that if Nintendo didn't do what it did and allowed Sony to enter the console race.. Sega would probably still have a console and be against Nintendo.

I find the real ironic in that the Wii is becoming the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast with classic titles like NiGHTS, Samba de Amigo, mulitple Sonic games, Sega Tennis, House of the Dead, rumoured Jet Set Radio game coming, etc., etc.

Skies of Arcadia 2 is also rumored. Hopefully it happens. TGS? Also isn't there some shenmue games rumored as well?

If I were Nintendo, I'd make Sonic blow Mario as payback for the disrespect Sega showed in the 90's. Damn hedgehog.
