Forums - PC - Pc Doesn't Recognize Removable Disks

@WoW: But great minds think alike.

@sc: Did your camera have software CD with it? I couldn't get XP to recognize my camera as removeable media, but using the software that came with it, it didn't need to (of course, this doesn't mean it would work in Vista...). But after i switched to Ubuntu, i didn't need the camera software.

A few months back I posted about my Usb Micro SD reader not being recognized after I reinstalled Vista. Well I just used my other PC to transfer files. A couple weeks ago I was trying to use a flash drive, and that wouldn't be recognized either. I just thought it was the same problem, and already spent alot of time trying to fix it without suceeding. I just got a new Digital Camera today, and its not being recognized as a removable disk either. So does anybody know how to fix this? I could use my other PC, but that PC isn't always available to me since it is the Family computer. Did something happen when I reinstalled Vista?

just install linux....

or you know, insstall windows xp

everyone knows vista is a joke on the consumers.

I have a couple of questions. I'm not suggesting that I'll have an answer if you do answer them, but if I can't help you, they may help someone else.

Do you hear the Vista equivalent of a doong-dnk (shell hardware detection noise) when you insert a USB drive?

Only for the camera. Everything else..no.

If so, does Vista prompt you to install drivers for any of your USB devicees when you insert them?

Yes but it fails to install the drivers.
Can you see your newly attached USB devices in the Device Manager?

Again.. only the camera everthing else no.
Have you installed SP1?

Yes

And here are some suggestions:
Try your USB devices on a different port. Sometimes Windows installs a bad device driver for one device on a port, and for each subsequent device installed, it will think you want to use that bad driver.

Already did.
Try opening up a command prompt and changing to the letter you think the drive should have. i.e. If your last drive letter shown in Windows Explorer is E:, try:
F:

It says"The system cannot find the drive specified"

Yes, but the software says it can't find a connection when I try to tranfer the pics. Also I find it alot easier by having a drive for the camera.

@sc: Now that i recall, i had similar problems with my memory card reader (do you have a card in it, it may not understand that you have the reader connected unless a card is in it).
As for tge camera, which manufacturers camera do you have?

I tried it with and without the card. The camera is a canon I think.

Another suggestion:
For safety's sake, if you're going to try this one, you might want to make a restore point for System Restore first. Switch to a PS/2 keyboard or mouse, then try uninstalling any entries marked Universal Host Controller or USB Root Hub in Device Manager. Restart the computer. Upon restart, Vista should auto-detect the USB controllers again, and hopefully your devices will work.

@sc: Do you need the reader to anything else but transfer photos? I mean Canon has pretty good software to transfer photos on and off the camera (not sure can you transfer other data too with the camera software, never tried).
