Pc Doesn't Recognize Removable Disks

A couple weeks ago I was trying to use a flash drive, and that wouldn't be recognized either. I could use my other PC, but that PC isn't always available to me since it is the Family computer. Did something happen when I reinstalled Vista?

or you know, insstall windows xp

everyone knows vista is a joke on the consumers.
