Forums - Sony - How much more would the PS3 have to sell to outsell the 360 by Dec 2009?

80,000 sounds like a lot, but it isn't as far fetched as it sounds. The PS3 will have a massive christmas in Europe and NA. It should match the 360 in NA this christmas, but will outsell it in Europe by vast amounts. The PS3 will also have a fairly good christmas in Japan with Eternal Sonata and WKS finally hitting the PS3.

In 2009 the PS3 will get a price cut, which will allow it to steam ahead. If you saw what the last PS3 price cut did, another price cut will do similar things. Also the release of FFXIII in Japan will sell hundreds of thousands of PS3's in Japan.

and gran turismo in europe and japan :/

360 in 09 its very cloudy.

We are already talking 2009 and 2008 is only half way done. The 360 library of games is awesome

PS3, WII and 360 all great systems depends on what type of console player you are.

Currently playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fallout 3, Halo ODST and Dragon Age Origins is next game

Well I hope GT5 comes in 2009, but the lead developer said it might not come till 2010 . If GT5 makes it to Europe by 2009, the 360 will be a distant 3rd in Europe.

It seems awesome games don't help the 360 sell better than the PS3. The 360 has had the biggest library of games since it launched, but the PS3 still outsells it every week (outside of a price cut/supply issues).

And I know that PS fans say this every year, but 2009 really should be the year of the playstation:

Killzone 2
Infamous
MAG
God of War 3
Ratchet and Clank
Naughty Dog game
Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIII

and probably a few unannounced games

 agree :)

well you have to take into account ps3 market growth.

ps3 is selling much more this year than last, and i expect 2009 to be no different.

ps3 is in a superb position in as it is for arguments sake tracking the same as 360(it is tracking more but im saying for arguments sake) with a much higher price point, the moment ps3 is renewed to £249, it will excell further

ps3 at £199 will sell as much as ps2 did.

but things will be clearer after fall 2008.

i predict ps3 could be ahead by june-july-august 2009 if not, then i will patiently await the time when it does overtake which is a certainty for sure.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

It needs to do ~76k more every week to even hit Dec 09 and it only achieved this about 3-4 weeks this year and we are already in August. Lets not forget people started with Dec 08, then changed to Jun 09 and now we are already seeing Dec 09. I will not be surprised when people start to realise the earliest this will happen is 2010 (if it happens).

I believe the elevated levels of PS3 sales was due to the huge price cut and Blu-Ray format win. With no 2008 price cut (and the 2009 price cut wont be as massive), Blu-Ray not showing massive growth (still 85%-90% DVD sell through) and PS2 still has some legs this holiday, dont be surprised if there is not as big a growth in levels as seen this year.

October to December decides all
i think last year Sony sold 4 mill ww

I really dont get why people take the sales in August and stretch them out the entire year.

For instance:
Last year the 360 sold about 3.5 million from January to September 07, and then sold almost 5,000,000 for September to December.

This year, the 360 has sold around 4.5million since January.

Last year about 60% of the 360 sales came AFTER August. So it would, following the same patters, sell about 6.5 million consoles this winter.

The PS3 up til now has sold 6 million consoles. Following the same pattern, it would sell around 9 million consoles this winter.

Now that being unrealistic for many reasons, I would put the PS3 at closer to 7-8 million consoles this winter and the 360 at about 5.5-6.5 million consoles this winter.

Exact science? No. But you can see that saying the PS3 will outsell the 360 at the same rate of 20,000 consoles a week is kinda stupid. If this pattern of the PS3 outselling the 360 continues then we may very well see the PS3 cut 2,000,000+ off of the 360's lead from September to December.
