To all you vgchartz mathematicians out there

How many more PS3s would Sony need to move, weekly, in order to catch and surpass the 360 by December 2009?

Right now, it's only doing so by about 20/30K....it doesn't seem enough.

Over 340k units per month. 340,000 x 16 = 5.44 million

80,000 sounds like a lot, but it isn't as far fetched as it sounds. The PS3 will have a massive christmas in Europe and NA. It should match the 360 in NA this christmas, but will outsell it in Europe by vast amounts. The PS3 will also have a fairly good christmas in Japan with Eternal Sonata and WKS finally hitting the PS3.

In 2009 the PS3 will get a price cut, which will allow it to steam ahead. If you saw what the last PS3 price cut did, another price cut will do similar things. Also the release of FFXIII in Japan will sell hundreds of thousands of PS3's in Japan.

Assuming the 360 has a 5.5 million lead, and December 09 is 16 months away, it would have to sell 343k more a month, or ~86k more a week worldwide.

And I know that PS fans say this every year, but 2009 really should be the year of the playstation:

Killzone 2
Infamous
MAG
God of War 3
Ratchet and Clank
Naughty Dog game
Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIII

and probably a few unannounced games
