Forums - Sony - First Heavy Rain Video released

I am glad this game is taking a survival horroresque route, because the gameplay looks really interesting.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I want her...the game I mean...

Hi, this is Vince with Shamwow.

The graphics and atmosphere are great but,QTE's just arn't cool regardless of how well they are implamented.I probably wont buy this in the future unless a future showing manages to blow me away.

I'm still not that impressed. It looks good technically, but I'm not sold on the game at all. QTE gameplay isn't going to convince me, and it just looks like high-res models of animated cutscenes past.

I'm confused now... Care to elaborate on that? xP

Hah I was trying to get off the computer fast so I rushed that sentence. I just mean...this looks similar to cutscenes from games like Final Fantasy or Resident Evil. It looks animated similarly, it looks technically similar (obviously a plus considering this is "ingame"), but I consider that a negative too.

This doesn't really seem to push boundaries of emotions or expression in games, and I think it's going to play out like many game cutscenes have before, only now you're playing through it, though obviously with QTE as well.

It's too early to judge but it doesn't seem to be revolutionary or anything...just some good looking models perhaps a little better than MGS4...

Considering that the graphics are all fans are hyping about this game, I don't feel I'm being harsh.

And its PS3 exclusive which is another reason to deslike it.

You should read this to get better idea of the game.

Gamespot, IGN and 1UP are praising this game.

Looks stunning and has dark atmosphere. Looks like this has a lot of potential to be a great game.

This is the opposite of what gets me excited about a game, to me it comes across as cgi movie with qte. It looks like 90% effort has gone in to graphics and 10% to gameplay. Give me fun, new, interesting gameplay any day.

-UBISOFT BOYCOTT!-

Stunning visuals, and the game is still months away.
But, help me in this one guys, where exactly is the game?...
Watching a movie and playing some QTE events? And solving some ... predictable puzzles (exactly as in the semi-brilliant, semi-lame Fahrenheit, aka Indigo Prophecy).
Hmmm... Sorry, not interested at all. I have loads of great adventures, that I haven't even started. And I mean LOADS...

It seems Sony did a bad job at showing Heavy Rain in the way they did. It also seems that 'a lot' of people don't even know adventure games or played Quantic Dream' other masterpiece 'Indigo Prophecy', also known as 'Fahrenheit'. I think Sony did a bad job at showing Heavy Rain because a lot of people don't seem to get it.

Heavy Rain is NOT a game with just cut-scenes mixed with QTEs. As a player you control your characters moves the whole time. From the moment the lady(from the trailer) got off her bike, to the point where she is exploring the house and found these bodies, you as a player are controlling her every move. You're choosing which way you want to go, what object or people you want to interact with and so on, and so on.

Suddenly that fat-guy comes home. As a player you still control your character, but you have to make a choise: confront the guy(as shown in the trailer) or sneak through the house to find and exit without him knowing you were there. At these moment where you have to choose, on-screen you have a smaller window where you can follow this guy' every move. That makes it easier for you to make choices. In the trailer you notice that she tries to escape silently, but she makes to much noise so the guy knows someone is in his house. When you two finally confront eachother, THAT'S the moment when these QTEs will start, as shown in the trailer.

SO, from the moment you get off your bike to the moment where you actually meet that fat-guy in his own house, you are in total control of your character. BUT, you can only move like a normal person would in that context. So no jumping around, no barrel-rolls, no punching and kicking in the air or things like that.

Remember, it's not an action game. It's a story-driven adventure where you have to solve puzzles and explore things to make progress in the story. Every choice you make(and you have to make a lot, and moral ones) in this game will have a real impact on the gameplay and the story.

Before i forget, in these QTEs you still make choices. For example, when that guy is chasing you in his own house, you can press triangle to grab the knife next to you and try to stab him, OR you can press square to try and reach for the door.

Well said. I was going to explain it but you did a much better job than I would have. Good post.
