@Viper: You forgot decapitation.

@OP: This is one of the freakiest games (storywise) you can find. If SK would make a sequel, it would be a day 1 purchase.

As for the gameplay, it has fixed camera angle (works in a similar fashion with Resident Evil), controls work a lot better and it has a lock-on to target, where you can aim different bodyparts of the enemy.
Since it's essentially an N64 game, it looks like one, but don't let it fool you, what misses in technical terms, there's atmosphere to replace it. ED isn't action based as RE, but it's more like psychological horror.

Definately worth of buying, i hesitated myself at first, but after getting the game myself, i have to say i'm really glad i did. There are lots of worse games in the genre, such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill series.

The gameplay is very straight-forward and easy to get into. Only initially building more powerful magick spells can be cumbersome, but once built, they're saved and easily accessible. I still say it's the best game on the GameCube and one of the greatest of all time. A truly unique horror experience unlike any other game. A dozen playable characters, intriguing story, excellent voice acting, downright fantastic sound if you have a good surround sound system, insanity effects, atmosphere, character development, and one of the best in-game cameras ever devised--you can't adjust it, and amazingly, you never want to. It both perfectly captures the action while providing dramatic horror framing.

Personally, I think it's wrong to own a GameCube and not have this game.

Sounds like I better pick it up quick then :D

 

Here's how awesome the sound is:  When casting magick spells, the symbols making the spell appear on the ground and emit beams of light and the name of each spell is spoken in a deep, ghostly or demonic voice which rumbles and echoes through surround sound systems.  I once played it at about 2 in the morning witht he lights off, with my surround sound cranked so that the music, sound effects, and spells rumbled through the walls.  Someone called the police and made a noise complaint and here they were, three huge cops coming to see what all the hubbub was and found one guy sitting alone on a Saturday night playing video games by himself. 

But whatever, the sound design is that damn good.  I turned it down a bit and kept playing.  The cops said they could hear it rumbling through the walls as they walked up to my place.  No shit.

... Wow. That's incredible. I almost wish I had surround sound on the TV in my room now.

 



Get used to the word Pargon...you'll be hearing it a lot. Eventually you'll find yourself sayign these weird incantations in yoru head while shopping, driving or whatever.


Also, Maximilian Riovas provides quite possibly the most fantastic cutscene performance ever to appear in real time polygons.

And finally, play through the game 3 times with each time choosing a different artifact. This will provide the final, and absolutely mind melding, ending.

Watch out for the blue screen of death.

"Xel'lotath, Pargon, Narokath, Pargon, Pargon, Santak, Pargon" Yay now I am sane again.



This game has in my opinion the best use of rumble ever.... when your health gets low the controller will pulse like a heartbeat, keeping in time with the heartbeat sound from the TV, and it gets stronger and louder the more health you lose.

I think after I beat Zelda : TP, Im going to get a wavebird and play through this game again. Its been long enough for it to be pretty unfamiliar to me all over again =)

This might be a spoiler in a way, but here is a list of some of the more common sanity effects (I haven't seen half of these myself.... I kept myself too sane, I'll have to play again and keep the sanity level low)

SPOILER

  • Sounds, such as footsteps, women and children screaming, doors slamming, the rattling of chains and the sound of a blade being sharpened.
  • Walls and ceilings bleeding. Attacking them causes more effusion.
  • When casting a spell, the player character's body above the waist violently explodes.
  • Appearance of large numbers of monsters that are not really there, and disappear when attacked.
  • The player character's head falling off. When picked up, the head begins to recite Shakespeare (specifically, Act III, Scene I of Hamlet).
  • Character or monsters shrinking or growing.
  • A version of the blue screen of death informing the player that all saved game data on the memory card has been deleted.
  • Statues and busts turning to look at the character. They turn back to original position when the character faces them.
  • Character whimpering and babbling to him or herself.
  • A "to-be-continued" message and promising continuation in a sequel game: Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Redemption.
  • Character walking into a room from a previous or future chapter that uses the same location.
  • When trying to save, instead of the usual "Do you wish to overwrite saved data" screen, there is a "Do you wish to delete all save files" with the options "Yes" and "Continue without saving." No matter what you do, all files appear to be deleted.
  • The word "VIDEO" appearing in the top-right corner in green text on an otherwise black screen, mimicking the "video" channel setting on most televisions when the game system is turned off.
  • Game suddenly stops responding to player's commands just as the player-character enters a room full of zombies. The screen displays an error message claiming that the controller has been disconnected. Meanwhile, the zombies attack and kill the helpless character.
