Forums - Microsoft - Microsofts 2008 RPG gambit - success or failure?

I think eventually it will turn out ok for MS. They have had to work hard to change the image of a console that has been so centered around Halo and FPSs.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Success--they sold out in Japan for Pete's sake!!

Looks like Tales of Vesperia can now be chalked up as a success. So far its had decent sales of ~130k in Japan and its metacritic rating of 81% at the moment makes it the best JRPG on the Xbox 360 by a little margin - 3% over Lost Odyssey.

Tease.

How are we defining success?

Sales, Reviews or Both?

Because ToV is looking like it will finish with 80+% review averages, but I'm not sure if the Worldwide total will ever crack 500k.

Well so long as it sells >600k between the U.S and Japan its a success because Naznatips will owe me some Wiiware! xD

Well its shaping up to be a success but we won't really know till next week. I just felt like giving this thread a bump.

Don't forget about Europe(even though ToV doesn't get released there until 2009.  ToV sales could suprise us(in a good way I might add) and we can't be sure until we see actual sales numbers for the game.

Too Human (bombed)
Tales of Vesperia(made Little boost in Japan, now need NA sales next week)

I hope so, it will be great for the JRPG genre in general to get some decent sales under its belt. Its been pretty much dead on every home console platform so far. Fingers crossed that it can find its feet on the Xbox 360.

Edit: Because the JRPG market place is far less crowded than last generation the Tales series should be getting some decent attention from people who haven't specifically been into or played the series before.

I never played a Tales yet I definitely want to get ToV right after I beat LO(not too far from finishing).  There is a suprising amount of people who never played any of the games in the series yet are interested in ToV on the internet forums.  ToV as the same thing that made ToS successful:lack of competition(IU wasn't that hyped even on the internet)

Let's see how ToV does in the USA... numbers next week?
