@Legend: You are right on that one, since PSX and PS2 gained their 3rd party support because they were so popular.

I'm not sure if they were exactly more popular at the time, depending on what the exact timing was on the release of those games.
The PSX however, proved to developers that 1) they would pay less licensing fees to Sony, meaning more money coming to them or less that would be required to get started, and 2) The CD medium would be much cheaper to mass produce compared to the cartridges of the N64 at the time.
In effect, it was much easier to get games out onto the PSX than the 64, meaning it was much less risky for the devs to put titles out and they would make a larger margin of profit. There could be many more factors that attributed to this, but from a buisness standpoint, you look not only at what is popular, but the projected costs to profit ratio will look like.

I don't blame you for not getting paper mario because it was a very obscure title, but you MUST play both games at some time in your life. Paper mario has been anounced for virtual console and try and find a copy of The Thousand Year Door in a bargin bin somewhere. The great thing about those games is that they do everything to throw all the rules of an RPG right out the window and it's what makes them so good. |
I actually have thousand year door, Istill just haven't had time to play it yet. I still have to finish RE4, FFXII, Twilight Princess, God War, God of War II, and a few other games I can't remember off the top of my head (during the 2 years of getting my masters I really didn't have time to play a lot of games that required any amount attention so I'm behind >_>).
You mean you haven't played RE7? Oh man, great game.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release. (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
The following polls were conducted in the last two weeks over at GameFAQs, (www.gamefaqs.com), which has a very large number of users, mainly from the United States, male and under 30 judging from past polls. Based on this, everyone ought to have bought both the GC and N64 because they had one of each of their favourite ever series of games within a genre on them.
A huge percentage of the people who go to Gamefaqs go for the message boards, that was in another poll. Much like the boards here, the Nintendo fans outnumber the Sony fans simply because the Wii is far more popular than the PS3. There was another poll which showed just how many of the people who voted were Wii owners, it was a lot of them. Obviously these people are going to vote for Nintendo series. PS2 fans used to dominate the polls, but that has changed this generation. Final Fantasy is almost equal to Zelda as the most popular series on the site, it did win the console RPG poll with 66,000 votes, about 20,000 more than Zelda got. The Gamefaqs top 10 FAQs are dominated by FF games and the FF boards are always extremely popular, so there are just as many Final Fantasy fans on the site, and most of them are PS/PS2 owners. However, Nintendo is still the most popular company among people who visit Gamefaqs regularly nowadays because of the popularity of the Wii versus the lack of popularity of the PS3.
One more thing, a lot of those series are popular among people who didn't even own an N64 or Game Cube, they just played it on a borrowed system or something. I don't think you'll find many people on any board who haven't played Ocarina of Time.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What's your all-time favorite 3D fighting series?
Dead or Alive 6.08%
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai/Tenkaichi 7.54%
Soul Calibur 16.41%
Super Smash Bros. 53.48%
Tekken 13.43%
Virtua Fighter 3.06%
Well this should be obvious, everyone has played Smash Bros. even if they didn't own an N64 or a Game Cube. Most people have a friend who owns it. None of the other fighting games are anywhere near as popular as Smash Bros.
What's your all-time favorite science fiction first-person shooter series?
Doom 14.9%
Half-Life 22.73%
Metroid Prime 30.04%
Quake 3.68%
Serious Sam 1.35%
Star Wars: Jedi Knight 8.95%
Timesplitters 10.17%
Unreal 8.18%
Almost all of those are PC FPS series and nobody plays PC games any more.
What's your all-time favorite 2D platform game series?
Bubble Bobble 1.93%
Castlevania 14.03%
Donkey Kong Country 5.96%
Ghosts 'n Goblins 0.8%
Mega Man 18.54%
Sonic the Hedgehog 15.67%
Super Mario Bros. 43.06%
All of the 2-d Mario games were on the NES and SNES and anyone who is fairly old has played these games and it's obviously a legendary series.
What's your all-time favorite 3D action adventure game series?
Devil May Cry 6.67%
God of War 6.25%
Grand Theft Auto 16.29%
Hitman 1.74%
Metal Gear Solid 17.12%
Prince of Persia 2.37%
Spider-Man 1.25%
The Legend of Zelda 46.73%
Tomb Raider 1.58%
Is it any surprise that Zelda won? Zelda is the most well recieved series of all time and it has been around since the NES. Link almost always wins in the Gamefaqs character battles, usually just above a Squaresoft character(Cloud, Sephiroth, or Chrono).
So yeah, the poll results are not unusual, they would probably be the same no matter which site you went to.

That's (RE4) the game I'm working on right now, slowly making my way through due to time and I'm just bad. I'm just starting chapter 3 (the castle) and I'm loving this game so far, can definitely see why people go crazy ove rthis game.
The GameFAQs poll of the day is huge. A lot bigger than many people think, and more watched than many people believe. I mean, it is 100,000 people saying their opinion, every day.
Search 'poll of the day' in Google. You get a few sites that have temporary polls of the day that last a month or so, and you have some little local news sites that have a 'poll of the day' during election session. But GameFAQs seems to be the largest and most well known "Poll of the Day" on the net.
A lot of people monitor it too, I recall an ABC World News Tonight segment and when reporting on the lacking PS3 sales, the anchor said something along the lines of "despite Sony's marketing campaign and high hopes for the system, the sales of the PlayStation Three are less than expected. Internet polls seem to indicate that about 40% of consumers think the console is simply too expensive"
The previous day on GameFAQs: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2693

why are you still playing that old game? RE7 is nearly twice as good as RE4. Must play.
It's because those are 3 games. PS and PS2 had more games to play on them.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!
