Forums - Sony - Does Sackboy deserve to be Sonys' Mascot?

IMO, LBP is way over hyped. Suddenly, "casual" gaming is OMIGAWDAWESOMENESS on the PS3...

Sackboy doesn't come close to them rabbids. BWAAAAAAH!!

To be completely honest, he doesn't sound too cool in my honest opinion. I mean, WTF Sony? I honestly do still believe that Jak and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank should have been the main mascots for the Playstation franchises. I'm even still mad that they just seemed to have pushed Jak to the side and was like "fuck him. We have drake now."

Anyways, he will do good as a mascot. Definitely not Mario good, but still good nontheless. (I hope Sackboy does "Solid Snake" good.)

Galaki, I also agree to an extent. A lot of people are hyping this up to the point where they think the game will have Halo type sales. I mean, where the hell is the Sackboy Mountain Dew? The sackboy helmets? Sackboy comics? Sackboy countdown? This game, imo, will sell well, around 3 mil lifetime, but it will need to have those things that I listed in order to have halo numbers. (which, in reality, it will not.)

I think they are also...

Are you kidding? Those things are ugly as balls.

reminds me of a kind of moms robot oil thing, where this traditional kids toy look is ironically selling the most advanced technology. In terms of going against type, of faster shinier etc, its def. a unique idea. I actually think his inherent reliance on different costumes etc will be a negative because it won't be as easily marketable as a red hat and moustache is. Give it time and we'll see.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I will answer this with another question: Can Pigs Fly ? The answer for both is the same and quite obveous. (Hint: Its Yes)

Sacboy is a perfect mascot, reasons to follow:

1. Cute, but not too cute.
2. He wears different costumes, so they can put him in comercials for other games and for the console in general.
3. His rough appearance lends to being cooler than Mario. Which was the key to the successful image of Genesis w/Sonic and PS1 w/Crash.

Cooler than Mario?? That's a bold statement but I do agree with the Sackboys different costumes. Sackboy can easily take on the persona of any protagonist of any AAA Sony games.

I love Mario.  But he's not cool.

Stars in great games, he's a fat plumber in overalls.

The thing about cool is that cool doesn't stay cool.  Look at Sonic and Crash - look how far cool took them.  Yeah Sonic's last main game sold a million, sure.  Mario decides to go race go karts and it sells 10 million copies.  He plays some baseball and it passes Sonic's main game.  That's not cool, that's legendary, that's iconic.  Like Mickey Mouse or Paul McCartney

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

i think cratos should of been there mascot, but i guess they want someone that appeals to everyone

Jak and Daxter or Ratchet and Clank seems to be a better mascot. Old snake as a mascot will be perfect for PS3
