When the Wii userbase equals that of the DS and the profits made from the Wii validate the vastly higher development cost.

So...maybe a couple years or so.

The development costs for the Wii aren't that much higher than development costs for (high end?) GC games...

Actually it would be cheaper that GC games were at their time.

I doubt as much as the DS. The DS is a lot easier and faster to develop for and and piracy problems might hinder some devs from putting a lot of games on the PSP. The PS3 and 360 don't have piracy problems.

Not as much as the DS, but quite a lot. As long as I get my JRPGs...I'm cool <3 2009 will be the "wave" IMO. Even the DS took over two years to get decent support. The Wii hasn't been out two yet.

@Bolded I hope you are joking.

lol. Well, I haven't heard of any when it comes to games...

I don't want to link anything, but the 360 is modded, and there are pirates. There are pirates on every console except the PS3(Though probably not for long).

Well I'm not an expert on the matter, but I imagine that Wii development costs (especially for high end games) would be higher than DS development costs, at least by a couple million. Then again, I reiterate that I'm not an expert on it.

You're correct: 1 million or so is what a DS game takes, 8 million or so is what a Wii game takes. Still, the way I interpreted the question wasn't in absolute terms, but in relative ones: how long until the Wii starts to see roughly the same share of third-party development that the DS does for the handhelds. Ctk495 can correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd say next year Wii is going to get a wave of great games, but the true gems will arrive in 2010.

I hope Wii would get great first party games as well, like DS.

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Are you kidding? Several countries such as Korea and Mexico are famous for pirating 360 games.

For the second half of 2008 the Wii has (approximately) 50 third party games of reasonable quality, of which the average gamer is probably going to be interested in 5 to 10 of those games ... For the same timeframe in 2009, I expect the Wii will have (approximately) 75 to 100 third party games of reasonable quality, of which the average gamer is probably going to be interested in 10 to 20 of those games; and I expect 2010 to be a better year for the Wii.

I don't really expect the Wii to ever match the total number of games released for the DS in a given year  (or to match the DS' best year) simply because the barrier for entry in a DS game is so much lower.

the only one still to be pirated is the ps3.

i doubt it as now.

right now all the big heads (square enix, EA, ubisoft, epic, etc etc)still follow 360+ps3.

maybe after 2 more years.

i think many now that you can make a goodlooking game like  (SMG) in a ps360 without any effort and costing less since the time it less to develop

those games end in the XBL, PSN.

many misundestand the development cost per game since is HD is have to expensive, but together ps3+360 u can make a great game and still get a huge profit from it.

without sacrificing the graphics.

Well I can see that costing more to develop, combined with the fact that games sell so well on the other home systems, means the Wii is unlikely to have dominant support like the DS. But it's still likely to grow a lot, especially if upcoming hardcore games like Mad World and The Conduit sell well enough.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

@Jo21: Since when was Epic a big head? they only have 2 franchises... Ubisoft and SE yea. But EA, Activision, Lucasarts, Namco Bandai, Capcom, Sega, THQ, Tecmo, etc. are all increasing their support for the Wii.

There will always be stubborn companies, but there's nothing we can do about.

Fullfilled Prophecies

2008 is already worlds better in that department than 2007 was. Last year around this time was very sparse in terms of quality third-party Wii games, a few gems like No More Heroes and Zack and Wiki notwithstanding.

This year, the Wii is getting its' own version of the vast majority of multiplat games. Not only that, but most of them are designed with Wii in mind instead of simply porting up from PS2. That, on top of a decent amount of exclusives. I mean, for the rest of this year (of the top of my head):

-Call of Duty 5 (with work put into it, unlike 3)
-Fatal Frame IV
-Tatsunoko (sp?) vs. Capcom
-Dead Rising
-Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
-Star Wars: Clone Wars
-Deadly Creatures
-RPGs left right and centre (whose names I don't know since I don't follow the genre)
-Spyborgs (this year? Could be wrong on that one)

That's just this year, off the top of my head. I could name plenty more for next year.

On top of that, many developers have recently expressed their great interest in developing big new Wii games.

2009 is the year where the Wii REALLY starts to scare Sony and Microsoft.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?
