Looks like I've got slots 1 and 3 taken with 256 MB of RAM each.

OMG where did you find that, best system info program I've ever seen! Thanks for posting that here!

if you want to be 100% sure that the ram will work in your computer and find out what kind of performance you are getting now and what you will probably get when you upgrade, go to www.crucial.com in internet explorer and run their program. It will tell you how many slots you have, what kind of ram you have, what kind of ram will go into your computer, your performance, and what you can be 100% sure will work in your computer. and since crucial makes their own ram, you can cut out the middle man and get a better deal.
You're either running ddr-400 or ddr-333. Either way, do yourself a favor and buy 4 512mb sticks. Best buy might have a good deal, but check newegg and a few other sites just for giggles to see if it's cheaper there. Upgrading ram, especially from 512mb is usually a good investment. Note: for winxp 32 bit, anything over 3gb is a waste.
If all you do is surf the net, listen to music and other things not involving modern gaming on your computer, maybe you should consider installing Linux (Ubuntu). My parents' desktop is from 2003. Only has 500MB of ram and it was very sluggish with its Windows XP installation. I Installed Ubuntu for them. It immediately started acting like a new computer for them in that it was no longer bogged down with start-up programs they didn't use.
I have Firefox open, music playing, and I'm running BOINC . Only 320MB are being used.
So if it fits your needs, give it a try to see if it makes more sense to you then upgrading. In case you didn't know, you can download and burn the installation CD, pop in the CD and you can test drive Ubuntu without installing it/deleting windows/changing your windows settings.
| bdbdbd said: Two things that haven't come out yet is, that when you have RAM on two different kind of sticks, your computer does two things: 1. The speed of the RAM is defined by the slower (for example you'd have 100 and 200MHz RAM:s, the speed is always 100MHz). 2. Usually the size is defined by the smaller, ie it reads both the same size (for example 512MB and 1GB would be 2x512). Btw, i thought you had been drinking last night and now your access to your memory is quite random. |
I never heard that before.
I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

He's running DDR-400. It's right in the CPU-Z info. You know PC3200.
My suggestion Rubang...

Just buy that. It's 2 gigs, it's all you need and there's no sense just buying 1 gig when a little bit more will give you a few more years. Hell you could even keep the 512 you already have, though I wouldn't recommend it. :D
Ya, get the 2GB from Newegg. It's your best bet. That way you know it's dual channel capable.
I have 2 256MB sticks I'm not using which I would have sent your way if your system only had 1 stick of 512. ;)
Prepare for termination! It is the only logical thing to do, for I am only loyal to Megatron.
