Yea I think this would be a good idea.

The credits at the beginning of movies and television shows are a nuisance. They serve no function beyond a plot by guilds to elevate their members. The reality is they are not in the least effective, and more to the point alienate the audience. The overwhelming majority of movie goers despise them as their precious time being wasted by pretentious pricks. Nobody likes them, and nobody pays them any attention. In fact this is one more inconvenience keeping the public out of movie theaters, and more then happy to see a movie on DVD where they can disc skip past the stupidity.

Anyone claiming that this antiquated practice can help to gain anyone respect does not understand the meaning of the word. Respect is earned through how you conduct yourself and what you provide. When you deliver a magnificent product consumers make it a point to learn your name. Games are not movies you have instant access to this information it is called the manual. Find me a movie that actually lists the names of those involved in a hard form.

David Jaffe is just being a self serving prick. He wants a cult of personality more then he wants sincere recognition. The reason he wants this is because he wants to parlay a couple success into the right to make millions of dollars with just a name. The industry does not need this, and neither does Hollywood for that matter. This is part of what is going wrong in Hollywood, and this is why their products are suffering for it. The name in Hollywood is what is important not the concept or the art.

If people are skipping out on movies because they cannot spare the 2-3 minutes for credits, then the world is doomed. I know people's attention spans are suffering, but there is a point where it becomes ridiculous. Not to mention the fact credits nowadays are usually shown in conjunction with something happening on screen.

The names (and faces) in the box covers are usually marketing. I doubt they insisted getting themselves into the cover.

But not that Jaffe would have been completely off, since the industry is going to the direction that the big ones are buying the small ones and the big publishers names read in the box. At least to me it makes a difference if the cover reads just "EA" or "EA" and "Will Wright".

@Twesterm: Well the people who wants their names in the boxes are going to make bad games anyway, so it may be better if the "hard workers" keep their names in the background.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

OK, Jaffe. But what if the creator made a bad game? Their name automatically goes under. Plus "Shigeru Miyamoto presents..." or "Tetsuya Nomura presents..." sounds...dumb. I'd rather have the "Nintendo presents..." or "Square Enix presents..." (just the company's name) at the start of the game and not on the cover. They get enough show on the credits anyway.

When Steven Spielberg makes a movie, it still says Universal on the box.

@Dodece: We aren't talking about at the beginning of the game.  Read the title.  Box cover!=Beginning of the game.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

David Jaffe is nothing more than an attention whore.

So his name (or Miyamoto's) should be placed on the cover but screw the other 50-100 people that put in just as much work on the game? Their name is perfectly fine sitting in the credits.

For stating his opinion on his own personal blog? Seriously, Jaffe is one of those people that get so much flack because crappy gaming news sites take his opinoins from his blog, delete what's not newsworthy, and post it as news. It happened with the Mario Kart comment, and with the Spiderman comment, and now this.

This. The developer's (company) name on the box is more than enough for me.

That could get very confusing very quickly. When someone "presents" manga in Japan in means they haven't made it, they're just giving it their support and "presenting" it to the public.

Here's something else from the same post on his blog that mtv decided wasn't worth the space.

Now I am not saying my name should NOT have been on the box. It should have. But so should perhaps 5 other folks from Singletrac who did key design and/or creation work and really birthed that franchise. And that is not to take away from all the work the rest of the team did or all the work the publisher did. And hell, if we were a logical business and shared a handful of game engines across all games versus all of this 'let's make our own fucking engine so our graphics can be 2% better than our competition even tho most of the public could really give a rat's ass when you are talking about that level of a difference', then a few of those 5 would not be on the box either because they would be being given credit for having written an amazing engine that LOTS of games used, not just TWISTED METAL (and WARHAWK)....are we getting there with stuff like the success of UNREAL ENGINE? And with the success of Wii where it's been made clear that a vast number of gamers do not think graphics have to make your eyes bleed for a game to be worth buying? We'll see...

His opinion is that when a franchise is created (eg the first Twisted Metal, those few people who had the creative vision and design for the game should be acknowledged, just like in movies.

It's a good idea. Both Kojima and Sid Meier already do it. Besides the game doesn't have to be called "Miyamoto's Super Mario Galaxy". Just do it like Kojima does: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. A Hideo Kojima game
