The names (and faces) in the box covers are usually marketing. I doubt they insisted getting themselves into the cover.
But not that Jaffe would have been completely off, since the industry is going to the direction that the big ones are buying the small ones and the big publishers names read in the box. At least to me it makes a difference if the cover reads just "EA" or "EA" and "Will Wright".
@Twesterm: Well the people who wants their names in the boxes are going to make bad games anyway, so it may be better if the "hard workers" keep their names in the background.
