Is there anyone out there who wouldn't put it past NPD to blatantly alter numbers some months (and compensate for them in the next month or maybe even across a few months) just for the sole purpose of making VGChartz look as if its totals are off?

For the sole purpose of making VGchartz numbers look off? Nah, they wouldn't comprimise their own integrity just to do that to some website they probably dont even care about.

We undertracked the PS3 by roughly 20%, that is quite a big percentage. We overtracked the 360 by roughly 50%, thats just not on.
Usual Nintendomination and also Wii Fit had no drop at all, it's not a fad!

Wow 360 got rocked haha. That is not a good sign. Good job Wii and DS and seems like our PS3 shortage thing was about on target considering. We underestimated it a little but shortages did exist to people who thought we were just being bias.
Software wise NCAA up there of course but some other surprising entries such as Rock Band showing the legs on Wii.
