Forums - Sales - What the heck is happening in Others?

Europe is the most casual of the markets and Wii is the most casual of the consoles. Sony made a major misstep in trying to fight MS on the core side while ignoring Nintendo on the casual side.

Nintendo has never done great in Europe (Sega owned it before Sony) but Wii is going to dominate this region just like the DS.

To be fair... it's totally Nintendo's fault.  They jutst never tried hard enough.  They were doing so well in the US and Japan their effort in Europe in comparison was just half ass for some reason up until like... the PS2 era after Sony expanded the europeon market.

I don't know if they were afraid they were getting too big and worried about another crash or what.

Nintendo consoles are selling well because
1: They have the games the european audiences want to buy. For the week ending the 9th, only 2 of the top 20 game sales weren't on nintendo consoles, and they were both Soul Calibur 4. European people are crazy for Mario Kart Wii for some reason, and Wii Fit, both selling over 2 million in Others alone and they're still in the top 5 games.

2: They're actually getting enough supply. Right now the cheapest you can get a Wii on amazon.com is 300$, and that's for a used one. OTOH, in europe they're selling for their MSRP, which to me shows they are getting enough supply.

3: A lack of big games for any console. This benefits the Wii, as the Wii doesn't need the boost from a AAA game to sell like crazy.

On a side note, when I was checking the price on the wii in the UK/Europe I found this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-Wii-Console-Sports/dp/B0007UATDG .
Wii: Originally 179.99 Pounds, now discounted to 179.98! What a deal!

Sarcasm?.... MKWii is the business, it's THE game to own.

@ No.2... yep, the Wii has good supply here, Wii Fit is a little on the low side (and was much worse) and MKWii was hard to find for a bit, apparently especially so in the Netherlands.

MKWii is a AAA game (although I don't like that term) as is Wii Fit (biggest marketing budget for Nintendo ever) and Brawl.

The thing with Wii is that hyped games appeal is not so short lived, people have mostly forgotten about GTAIV now but  a good number of 1st party (and the odd 3rd party like Guitar Hero and M&S) Wii titles are, and still will be selling like crazy for another year or two.

nice job on the numbers. you did some work son.

Maybe people are holding off a bit ...after all it has been announced a machine with 80gb for this month and people know it since mid july.

Wii Fit is making great strides too.Hordes of non-gamers have bought the damn thing along the console to play it once or twice.

Always an excuse to be made for the home team eh?

Oh, but I do love your passive agressive jab at Wii Fit. "Non-Gamers" (oh that's so harsh) buy it just to play it once or twice (man that's condisending). You never miss a step in trolling my friend. Oh well, at least when people buy a PS3 to play a game once or twice (because they really bought it for Blu-Ray), they can still watch Blu-Ray movies on it right?

By 'for some reason' I just meant 'for some reason'. Like, Europeans are crazy fond of MKWii, I don't know why, but good for them.

As for the the third point, yeah MKWii is a AAA game, as is Wii Fit, but they both have been out in Others for 4 months. The Wii doesn't need AAA games released in the recent past to sell well.

Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.

Acolyte of Disruption

@TheSource: You forgot something important, which is the competition aspect. Looking at Europe, it definately is the market where the competition is the hardest and it's the market where Nintendo basically cannot afford to lose sales, if it wants to compete Sony there. Wasn't it just recently, when Wii passed PS3 in sales numbers in Spain and Italy, despite PS3 getting released 4 months later than Wii, which possibly wouldn't have been possible if the supply would have been diverted to NA, where the demand is highest. If Nintendo wants to break the Playstation brand, they need to get the Wii ahead of PS3 before it gains enough ground.

@Kasz: That was only partially true. The lawsuits with Atari in the 80:s propably had much to do with Nintendo not being able to expand to Europe as they should have, at least not before Sega had already gained a strong foothold. Nintendo of Europe was founded in 1991, just prior to SNES release, but then they needed to learn how the market works, when dealing with numerous countries, cultures, laws and importers.
When Sony came into the market, it already knew how the market worked and how to deal with it (just look how much growth there was that gen in Europe, in comparision to other regions), with the experiece of selling electronics for decades here.
Before the PSX (atleast here in Finland), you could find games only from gamestores or electronics stores, while Sony pulled its strings and got its console to the markets that had a electronics section. I'd guess that Sony did practically the same everywhere else too. Not expanding the audience, but expanded the retail.
