I thought so too but now i'm thinking R2 won't do well with all the hate it receives. I didn't think LBP would do that well but it seems theres alot of interest. Last I checked it was #57 on amazon. Two months before it's release.

If people want to have a story they certainly can, have you seen the commercial with the level on saving a princess? The overall game may not have a story (that remains to be seen as far as the levels given with the game) but each level can have it's own story. I don't see how that's any worse than an overarching story that is almost never touched on at all. Super Mario Brothers was certainly fun don't get me wrong. But emotional and meaningful storytelling it is not. |
I'm sorry to disappoint you, but not everybody keeps up with information on all games. I was merely asking for just more information about the game because I personally have never heard about a platformer without a story. But that is just me. I wasn't trying to be one of the gamers hating on the game, or saying that the game you like sucks. Just wanted to know if this could be my second reason for me to buy a PS3 (MGS4 being the first).
But thanks to all of your feedback, I now know that this game is prolly not for me. I personally would not spend my day trying to make a level, just to end up finishing it in a few minutes and I would not be able to convince any of my family members and friends to play the game with me. And if there is no good overarching story to it, whether it be as deep as other story-rich games or as pathetic as SMB games, then the only point to finish the levels for me is to see if I can do it....and I personally have a bad history of losing interest in games if the only motivation to finish the game is to see if I can do it. Oh, and I personally don't like buying other people's level design.
But those reasons are just my own personal ones.
I don't have a PS3, I won't be fitting one in my budget anytime soon. I really really want this game to do well. I want to see more physics based platoformers. I've been dreaming about games like this for many years.
I will side with the idea that the core fanbase won't be eating this game up. I also agree this isn't going to push a new wave of gaming for the PS3, but then again I hope it sells many millions.
Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

So you mean to tell me that a game such as LBP can give me the kind of emotional value that Mario and Sonic (1-3) gave me as kid? You've got to be joking. The game is virtually open ended as opposed to Mario or Sonic who had a full story in each installment (and cartoon series). This game will not be the Mario of its time and give a child or even adult the same kind of joy that those influential sidescrollers gave. Back, way back when Sonic and Mario were on top even as simplistic as the storyline for these games were, they captured a players imagination with very little to go on until Super Mario 3 and then world. This is why 1,3, paper mario, world etc stood out. If you wanted more depth than that and action names that stood out back in the day besides those were Ninja gaiden, shinobi, Contra, Kid Icarus, Mega man, Castlevania, Donkey Kong, Super Metroid. Those are platformers that leave a very dear brand on gamers hearts, and their stories and interesting characters made it fun. This game can only be enjoyed at it's height with multiplayer, yet for the life of me I STILL cannot understand the true depth and concept (IE: Reason for being). You cannot build a houshold name out of an open ended game. You might ask why..and i'll give you the answer to that. It's because you cannot relate with a souless character.
What was the storyline in Loadrunner? Ghost's n Goblins? Gauntlet? not having a storyline never hurt those games' popularity.
Besides, the game isn't even released yet. Who's to say there's no story?
Just because there's a level creator bundled with games like Starcraft didn't make the user content any less downloaded either.
So i have to ask why all the hate for a game that hasn't even been released yet?

Proud Sony Rear Admiral
I think people should maybe read a bit more from what all the "media" is saying, [not SONY] about LBP. I must admit that I am yet to read one negative thing that has been said from anyone who has played or even seen the game yet.
Also, from what I am reading and hearing, LBP seams to have more interest from gamers than MGS4 and is going to be advertised a lot more by SONY as well.
With 50 levels, boss fights, great physics and art the stand alone game without the editor would do very well alone. Too much praise and way too much momentum to bring this killer game down.
Just remember, bad publisity can be very good publisity. These kinder threads are only making LBP more popular and well known. Thanks OP!

@Spankey
The hate is mostly only comming from non PS3 owners, that is obvious, isn't it? But, just look a how many non PS3 owners are giving this game raps and really want it. I think a lot of these haters will go into hiding once the game gets released, just like when MGS4 was released and how obvious was it's success!
If the game was on the Wii or even the 360, these so called "haters" would be lovers. Sad really...

I'm getting a PS3 soon and i'm still looking for a reason to buy it.

PS3 fans keep declaring it is the ultimate casual game, but its based around building and swapping levels online, a completely hardcore experience. If the game IS hardcore it will sell very well in and of itself but wont push consoles (as one would have to think between early Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii adopters that the hardcore market has been tapped). IF the game is casual it will not sell well or push many consoles, unless the PS3 sees a LARGE price drop prior to the game's release. |
All the negativity you harbor towards title will be eradicated once you get hands on. Wait till you actually play the game. (I have by the way)
Console Agnostic since 2001.

The good part about LBP is that it can become any of those platformers you mentioned. It will take a little time after launch, but the fact that it is open ended is not a disadvantage, it is potential to become the best platformer yet...
Also as a side note, people commenting on the sales of LBP remind me of the MGS4 discussions. There were people saying that MGS4 won't sell more than 700k first week, crazy fools....
Don't make bold statements before even looking at the game features...
PSN ID: T_Gears
End of 2009 ltd sales:
Wii = 67-68m
X360 = 38-39m
PS3 = 34-35m
Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).
