40GB doesn't have Backward compatibility (with PS2) anywhere in the world.

Europe hasn't had a PS3 model with BC since last year when they discontinued th 60GB here.

In fact, despite the numerous models released in America.... this 80GB model will only be the third model here in Europe. At first there was a "gimped" version of the American 60GB, which has software BC instead of hardware..... then they discontiued it and gave us the 40GB with no BC.... now they are swapping the 40GB for the 80GB, also without BC.

It is at least simpler here in Europe.

In America it was the 20GB and 60GB at first.... then the 20GB was stopped, after a while the 80GB was added along with a price cut/shuffle.... then the 60GB was stopped and the 40GB introduced, then the 80GB was stopped, but reintroduced for the MGS4 bundle.... and now the old 80GB and the 40GB are both being stopped, with the new 80GB releasing.

People don't pay that much attention to upcoming (or even existing) hardware SKUs for consoles. The *vast* majority of PS3 buyers won't know that the lower end model doesn't have backward compatibility. According to the Nelson study, most PS3 owners didn't even know it could play BD last year.

I was playing Halo 3 on Xbox Live the other day, and there was actually two people playing capable of having a conversation (which is rare on Xbox Live). They had no idea what the Xbox 360 Elite had -- one of them said he wanted to get a hard drive so he could save replays and he didn't have an elite. The other was asking him about his Xbox and both seemed to think there were just arcade units and elites. The elite was a good deal, according to both, because it came with extra controllers and the expensive headset and the hard drive, whereas the white unit didn't have any of that stuff.

I didn't bother telling them that the Elite is a complete rip off intended exactly for uninformed people like them -- it has 2x the hard drive of the Premium and no other benefits for an extra $70 over the Premium. No extra controllers, no extra headset (and you can get a better 2.5mm headset for $10).

I just played, grateful that they weren't screaming FAG FAG FAG FAG at each other and saying things like, "ur only 9 and i'm 19 then i'm ten years older and you should listen to elders fag! lol bitch" which is usually how Xbox Live works.
