To be honest, if Mario had never been created we wouldn't even have ever heard of him, but the prospect does sound rather grim looking at how great he is and his importance to Nintendo and Gaming as a whole.

I think they could've put anyone in there and it wouldn't matter. The Mario games weren't (and still aren't) fun because of the character, it was the gameplay. The same with Sonic games. It's not like is an RPG where the characters play a big part of why the game is good (imo, at least)... it's Mario for God's sake! You care about the character because the games were fun, not the other way arround...

Nintnedo wouldnt be big today, it was the original Mario that helped the nes sell well. Also Nintendo brought back the video game Industry after the crash so... Nintendo - Mario = small game industry.
