Forums - Gaming - Game Informer: Too Human Review! 6.5

I wouldn't wory to much about this for now. This is just one review. But if the mass majority of the reviews are like this if not lower, then I'd worry. Being a fan of the original Siren on the PS2, Siren received anywhere from a 9/10 to a 4/10 which resulted in a 70% average rating after it was all said and done. But for me, the game was worth the $5 rental and then the full $40 price tag shortly after. Let's not jump the gun, people, and don't put too much faith in numerical ratings.

I copied and pasted it from another thread, lol. I figured it was.

irst Too Human was not considered a "big gun" for the 360. It has never been in the same breath as GOW2, Fable 2, halo Wars, Halo, etc. Second I am so sick of seeing people make up their minds about games based on just "game journalist" reviews. There have been so many good games on all systems the last few years which people have not even tried because of reviews by magazines who half the time I think are not even in it to have fun anymore.  Examples Folk Lore, Viking (which got 6's and is a very very fun game), Overlord,  Earth Defense Force(which has become a bit of a cult hit), The Outfit, and I am sure I am missing a ton more. I'm not saying spend $60 on them. Rent them, try them when they price drop, but do not bash a game when you have not even tried it yet because of a review.

I actually agree. I said earlier, this game wasn't really hyped as much as Sony fans try to claim. I think most people expected average-mediocre scores based off the many, many previews that said this game wasn't AAA.

"Too Human has been characterized as a vaunted legendary ace up the 360s sleeve that might amaze everone, for a long time now."

As for that statement, a year ago, yes, it was very hyped. Two months ago, not so much. Last month, since the GAF debacle and the previews, interest waned significantly.

Nobody was making "Too Human" threads like they were just before Haze, MGS4, or even Tales of Vesperia were/are released. It just wasn't very hyped lately.

So, pretty much all these upcoming releases are more hyped than Too Human, for 2008, on the 360 or 360/PC, imo:

Tales of Vesperia

Infinite Undiscovery

Fable II

Left 4 Dead

Gears of War 2

The Last Remnant

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts(Yes, even this)

Alan Wake and Halo Wars are both way more hyped than Too Human, 2009

Not to mention a ton of multiplats that are very hyped, like Mirror's Edge and Resident Evil 5.

If any of these bomb, it would hurt. Too Human, not so much. That's my take. Might be wrong, but I just haven't seen many people all excited about Too Human, lol.

Sounds like downplaying here.  Nothing personal though.

So, did a second playthrough. The control system is sort-of fubared - it's barely functional and that's it. The cam isn't that bad when you select the ISO mode - still gotta fiddle from time to time but it's workable - which makes me think now, with so many dead angles why don't we have a radar? it's a nice clutch for faulty cams. Also I don't understand why both triggers are assigned to ranged combat - seems such a big waste, ranged combat doesn't generate combo points which is what fuels the combat skills.

I hope there are more skills along the way. The demo makes it look like there's a total of 3 active skills per char available at any time, wich is rather uninmpressive.

The whole item system seems ok, pretty standard stuff.

From the demo, it feels like the standard roguelike we get most of the time: flawed in several areas but workable enough to have some dungeon romps from time to time.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

It's not a downplay. If Too Human was such a big AAA game for Microsoft wouldn't you think they would have put it front and center on display at E3? Arcade titles got more show. Im still getting Too Human because I love dungeon crawler games, not to mention i liked the demo (Actually just got my preorder armor code from gamestop just now). The game is still going to sell a good number IMO. A lot of people liked the demo they just aren't as vocal on boards as the haters. I suspect this game may have a wide range of review scores like Assassins Creed had, which is why people should wait to see what other reviews come out, and what other regular gamers say

Too Human could never approach the hype enjoyed by Haze. The reason Haze got so much hype was, because it was filling an empty void. Both the volume void, and the quality void. The PS3 had two notable exclusive titles in the first six months of the year Prologue basically a extended demo, and Metal Gear Solid. Any member of the I sold my soul to Sony club had no choice but to include the title front and center.

The reasoning was sound listing off two exclusive titles sounds remarkably hollow. Remember three is a crowd, and it is more psychologically fulfilling. So they were going to include Haze regardless. Every member of the Sony defense forces arguing a quantity or quality debate was going to swing Haze about their head like a mace. They just couldn't win with just two games. More to the point Haze was the only hope to fill a festering need for anything to match Halo, Bioshock, or Gears.

That was the second problem if you are a PS3 booster you have nothing to use as leverage in these debates. How can you defend your console against the likes of these critically acclaimed titles with timed exclusive Unreal Tournament, and a launch title that could not break into AAA status. You couldn't so for them Haze was a promised messiah. The answer to their prayers. To be fair it is easy to see why they had the hope. Especially when you know it was perhaps the only chance for the PS3 to crawl into the shooter race. With Gears and Halo coming it is going to be a very tall order to do that now.

Too Human could never approach that level of hype, because it was never that needed. Even worse the gamers were well educated about the game. The game was not hidden from view. So unless you willfully lived under a rock you had a basic understanding for what this game was months ago. What have there been half a dozen developer diaries, followed by dozens of interviews. We perhaps have known more about this game then any game released in the last year.

So how can one be hyped out of ignorance. Those that are excited about the game are really excited by the design choices. Would you call it hype or passion then. Would we say someone who enjoys Grand Theft Auto 4 is succumbing to hype, or would we say they really enjoy the game?

Not shocked. I believe most people thought this was going to be a flop

here ya go. Gamespot thinks differently it seems.
