There was an article about it on BBC, and I was shocked that it didn't have 3G, meaning download speeds are really slow. I mean my phone which I got in January has 3G, and that was only a mid-range phone

I thought I had read somewhere that the iPhone doesn't work with AT&T, is that actually true? Mind you I randomly read this on a forum (don't even remember which one) so I would be in no way at all surprised if this wasn't true.

Of course it works with AT&T. AT&T and Apple are the only places you can buy it from.

Well glad I generally take rumors I hear on forums as complete crap. ;)

And I know jack crap about the iPhone since I really don't care about phones, my iPod works fine, I don't use AT&T, and I really don't care about any of its features since I just want a phone as a phone.

We'll have to see how the sales hold up. I'm sure we've all seen Video Game systems launch to enormous fanfare, only to settle into moderate sales once the fanatics had all gotten their system. N64 comes to mind (outside of America). If it's still selling extremely well 3 months from now, I think it's safe to say that Apple has a winner regardless of any reservations we may have.

Also, for anyone who hasn't seen this, watch this -- it's hilarious.

Synopsis: woman shows up at Apple store with 100,000 dollars in cash. Woman pays off 800 dollars to get first spot in line from some schmoe. She tells Camera crew that she's going to buy all the iPhones in the store and sell them on eBay. If you've ever been to a video game console opening day, I think you can already see where this is heading :p

Saw that one comming but still nice to see ...

I hate scalpers (and speculative investors in general) because they take advantage of tight demand and artificially inflate the price of a product. I take joy when they find their plans falling apart. Currently I'm getting a lot of joy from watching the housing market locally where people are starting to lose thousands of dollars because the market has stagnated and will soon be dropping.

Same here man. That's why it was funny with the PS3. A few people did it with the 360, so some relized they could do it with  the PS3. To bad everyone had this idea.

But, I'm not big on cell phones. Can you beleive I don't own one. I think they just promote stupidity in a way. Example is that my friends girlfriend is extremly into texting. Basiclly the stupidest thing you can do with your time. Why write when you can call. But, it's affected her writing. I can't read a thing that girl writes. Sifice to say, technology has reduced her need to think. I need a phone to be a phone. Not internet, pictures or misuc. I have a PC and Camera for that. [/rant]

And I'm a bit surprised by seeing Kwaad here. I thought he was banned indefinatly. Oh weel. As long as you don't troll, I'm cool with you.

Just to remind everyone that this is a phone - not a console. And what that means, is we'll see revision after revision come out - maybe every 3 months - indefinitely. The iPhone will never be phased out. If there are problems/complaints with it, Apple can simply address them in a future revision.

I just wish it supported J2ME (MIDP2) apps, then the stuff I was doing at work would run natively on it.

Download speeds/protocols are almost certainly something Apple will fix.

I would love to get one - but I imagine it could take a year or two before they reach Australian shores.

(PS - good to see you back Kwaad! Where have you been?)

It may be way too much for me to afford. But either way, you got to admit it's one incredible machine!

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

You do know apple has an exclusve contract with AT&T for like 2 years, and the AT&T data network is the worst in the industry... Apple can spend billions and billions and trillions and hundreds of trillions of dollars to make the iPhone the most powerful, fastest, most compatable phone in the galaxy. However... as long as they are exclusive to AT&T for the next 2 years. AT&T is the only one who can make the phone worth a damn.

It's great the way it is. AT&T needs a better data-service. That is the ONLY problem I see with the iPhone.

I fly this flag in victory!

I just read an article on Gizmodo that the iphone didn't sell out anywhere, and that people can buy up to 4 now.

I think iPhone is going to perform poorly. You can get Razrs or Blackberrys cheap or free with some contracts, and get the "big enough" iPod for $250. People will choose the cheaper dedicated devices as always.

It could have succeeded if it arrived kinda quietly, and then had some time to drop the price and improve performance and features. Now the press and public expect the product to cure cancer, and when it doesn't, it will become a punchline on Leno. Apple needed to do the standard announce-just-before-launch, instead of trying to show off by overshadowing CES and then hyping for months.

Price drops, increased storage capacity and a faster network could eventually make it a huge product. But if that's the case, why the launch hype? Now they're in danger of having highly publicized short-term inadequecies killing the momentum.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
