Forums - Sales - Nintendo: Third-Party Games Not Selling on Wii is a False Assumption

Nintendo of America's VP of Corporate Affairs, Denise Kaigler, has "set the record straight." She says the idea that software isn't selling on Wii is a false assumption that's been spread around.

by James Brightman on Thursday, August 07, 2008

For as long as the Wii has been on the market, industry pundits and journalists have pointed to low software tie ratios and sluggish sales of third-party games on the platform. Nintendo is getting increasingly annoyed by this perception, however. With 19 third-party titles that have sold over 400K units in the U.S. and a few that have gone on to be blockbusters, such as Guitar Hero III and Mario & Sonic, Nintendo feels it's about time that people start thinking differently about how games sell on the Wii.

Speaking to GameDaily BIZ during E3, Nintendo of America's Vice President of Coporate Affairs, Denise Kaigler, commented, "There is an assumption out there that just simply isn't true... We're setting the record straight. This is fact," she said while pointing to a chart supplied to Nintendo by The NPD Group. "We are selling third-party games and they are doing very well, and better than our competitors."

In fact, according to the data in the chart, the Wii has sold more software (first-party and third-party combined) than either the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3 when looking at the first 19 months of availability in the U.S. for each platform.

Of course, given how well Nintendo's own titles tend to sell, the above chart is no doubt affected by the inclusion of first-party games. At the very least, however, it does show that a boatload of Wii games in general have been sold. We've contacted NPD and Nintendo to see if a chart that focuses only on third-party sales is available. We'll be sure to bring that to you if/when we receive it.

When I first saw this I thought they would have only 3rd party with games like carnival games and mario and sonic and the olympics etc but to include first party as well to prove that 3rd party are doing really is well is misleading as gamedaily points out.  Guess is nothing new since MS and Sony do the same with numbers to mislead people from time to time as well.

Actually, this topic has been discussed before and someone posted how much 3rd party software Wii sold in x amount of time since launch and compared it to PS3 and 360. And actually, 3rd party software had sold more than 1st party + 3rd party on either, PS3 or 360 in the same timeframe.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

3rd party software on Wii, that is.

This is the case for NA

Wii NA 2008 - 36M

http://vgchartz.com/ayearly.php?year=2008&console=Wii&maker=Nintendo&boxartz=1

~ 19.2M of those are 1st party.

Ps3 NA 2008 - 17.8M

~ 3M are 1st party

Wii takes it by somewhere around 2M if you exclude Ps3  1st Party, it loses if you don't.

X360 3rd party > Wii 3rd party almost certainly.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

Why does she post a chart with 1st +3rd party when trying to make a point about third party sales..

I don't know but logic would say a chart showing third party only sales would be more interesting...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

My last post was 2008 only, and NA only. For first 19 months, this will be roughly the case WorldWide:

Wii Total software - 143M.

1st party Nintendo titles -  ~ 93.2M

3rd party titles -  ~ 50M

Ps3 total software - 62.6M

1st Party sony titles - ~ 14.6M

3rd party titles - ~ 48M

X360 total software (incomplete, so data will be heavily lacking) - 42.3M

1st party MS titles - ~ 11M

3rd party titles - 30M minimum.

3rd party.
Sure.

Good 3rd party?
Think again.

Yeah, the chart is pretty much worthless when it combines 1st and 3rd party sales. It almost makes it SEEM like they are using smoke and mirrors.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

that chart is retarded it needs to only show 3rd party games.... very missleading

Honestly, why this "Assumption" exists is mainly because the PS3 and XBox 360 had a handful of third party games that sold amazingly well in their first 19 months whereas the Wii has had a lot more games which sold to a level where they were profitable and (therefore) successful. There are many people on this site are under the impression that any game that doesn't break a Million units sold is a failure, where the fact is that there are a lot of games which will become profitable after they only sell 125,000 or 250,000 units.
