Forums - Nintendo - The name "Wii". Who else thinks it was beyond brilliant?

Am I the only person who did not like the name Revolution?

When I first heard about the Nintendo Revolution, I was a lapsed console gamer; I said to myself, "Nintendo... Revolution? Yeah, well, good luck with that." The name just struck me as an empty, overused buzzword designed to sound "cool."

I have to admit that hearing "Wii" for the first time, was a WTF moment. But thinking the name for a second made it sound great. And for marketing even greater.
And the OP had a mistake, since it wasn't names as Nintendo Wii. It was named as Wii, naming it as "Nintendo Wii" would have wrecked the whole idea of the name. Nintendo took a whole new route in branding.

@ookaze: Wasn't Famicom Nintendo Family Computer. Anyway, NES was "Famicom" only in Japan.
As for GC, it was "Nintendo GameCube", no matter how light "Nintendo" was in the name.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

1. yes, Genesis and Dreamcast are the coolest console names.
2. Wii is a great marketing device (see my above post)
3. If the Wii hadn't taken off the way it did, then the name would be a complete joke but the name was part of it's success....

Imagine if the Gamecube (purple cube, handle, funny controller) was named Wii, that would have been a disaster.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

While I've grown to accept the name 'Wii', and it has developed a certain charm, it would have been infinitely better as Revolution. I mean, I think that name is infinitely marketable to gamers and non-gamers alike, and it definitely signified the new direction.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

i think wii is funny.

but seriously i prefered revolution by alot.

lt's cool I didn't like the name at the beginning though.

I thought Revolution was so cool, and I was so stoked to buy it. When I heard that it was to be the Wii, the winds kinda got knocked out of my sales, since it sounded so lame. But I got over it within a few days, and am happy to say I've enjoyed everyday with it!

Its certainly far better then 'Gamecube'

Pfft, at least with the gamecube you knew what you were getting

it plays games and is vaguely cube shaped :P

Revolution is cool but for some people it may be hard to pronounce. Wii is simple and fun with many taglines.

Above I'm a proud Gran Turismo fan, not a Sony fanboy, and now a proud 360 owner, but sharing xbox live accts ATM
