I have to admit that hearing "Wii" for the first time, was a WTF moment. But thinking the name for a second made it sound great. And for marketing even greater.
And the OP had a mistake, since it wasn't names as Nintendo Wii. It was named as Wii, naming it as "Nintendo Wii" would have wrecked the whole idea of the name. Nintendo took a whole new route in branding.
@ookaze: Wasn't Famicom Nintendo Family Computer. Anyway, NES was "Famicom" only in Japan.
As for GC, it was "Nintendo GameCube", no matter how light "Nintendo" was in the name.
Ei Kiinasti.
Eikä Japanisti.
Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.
Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.
