IGN doesn't list any big games for December 2008, I'm trying to remember if the 360 had any big games in December last year.
The last really big games I remember from 2007 were Mass Effect and Rock Band, and those were both released on November 20.

Considering most Americans do their Christmas shopping at the last minute (instead of getting it done the Friday and weekend after Thanksgiving like in the past), I'm surprised there are no big games scheduled for December 9 or even December 16.

Where is this list for big games on IGN?

I wish we could complain about too many games over in the Sony section, well we have some gems so no complaining.

Its very rare a company will launch a game after Black Friday in the US.

Reasoning is that the biggest shopping day is Black Friday, and after that, it would be rather hard to market, and sell games in the maelstrom that is Christmas shopping.

So for maximum yields, the best time to launch a game is November, because you get Black Friday, and December which are the best times to shop.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I agree.  I think it would be more benficial for a game to be out for the entirety of December, instead of part of it.

Topic starter- you release games in the holiday season because more people are in stores at the time. Your best chances of selling a game is when people are physically near them right. Well there ya go. Thus it's only smart to release games at that time.

However the risk you run is lots and lots of competition with other games on that same system.  That's the main risk.  Thus a lot of games like to release over the other periods in the idea of path of least resistance.  But you run the risk of the game not having enough hype or brand appeal causing the game to flop.

yeah. I always wondered why they don't release games in the summer..... oh well. And holy crap @ the 10-14 - 10-21 week. that's like 13 games released in one week and 6 in one day... that's insane.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it
