Forums - Nintendo - DS Japanese Import Buyers Guide

Let's use this topic to recommend DS titles from the land of the rising sun that have not been localized yet. Take into account that 99% of us don't speak Japanese, so consider how much the language barrier gets in the way before recommending. Here's some I have played recently, and will add on as I run through more:

1. ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat-I really don't like the artistic direction of this game. The sprites look like muddier versions of GBA Fire Emblem characters, but the backgrounds are all 3D which really makes the sprites stand out badly against them. The backgrounds stutter violently as they move, which is completely distacting. All of the menus, screens and voice acting are Japanese, and I couldn't find any option for English subtitles, rendering the game basically unplayable if you don't know the language. The CGs are gorgeous though, as are the battle screen animations.

2. Metal Slug 7-I shouldn't have to explain the gameplay behind this, but it's Contra's cousin for those that aren't familiar. The animations are smooth as butter. The action is intense and pure classic Metal Slug. I found it slightly easier in difficulty in comparison to Contra 4, but not by too much. The main menus are in English, and the language barrier never gets in the way at all. This is very playable and I recommend it to everyone and anyone that enjoy SHMUPs. Do note however that this game is getting localized soon, so it may be worth it to hold out.

3. Bangai-O Spirits-Outstanding! The art design is a little underwhelming but it has good reason. There is SO MUCH going on screen at once with no slow down. Missiles everywhere. This is both a SHMUP and a puzzle game. Each contained room is a stage where all enemies must be defeated and knowing your environment and enemy patterns ends up the only way to survive. There are still screens between each stage that tell some story between three people, but I have no idea what it's about. It doesn't seem very intergral to the gameplay, which is very easy to figure out just by trying out the buttons. I cannot recommend this game highly enough. Another Treasure treasure! This will be on US and PAL shores this month I believe, so hold out, but do buy it when it's here.

I'll start off with these and add more tomorrow. Please feel free to add your own thoughts on your import experiences, or if you have a game you would like me to try out, just give me a reply, and i'll give it a shot. Tomorrow i'll go in depth with Ouendan 2(The JP Elite Beat Agents), Tales of Innocense, Bleach DS 3rd and Jump Ultimate Stars.

Jump Ultimate Stars definitely is number 1, is (for me) the best game on DS, is a figther with manga characters as figthers, helpers and boost.

I want ouendan so badly and JUS and Taiko!

How about the language barrier? Is it difficult to understand the cards system because it's in Japanese? What about the menus?

@pichu_pichu-I was playing Ouendan 2 today for a bit and let me tell you it's worth every penny you could spend on it. The soundtrack is unbelieveable, and I don't even listen to Japanese music. I know how big an Elite Beat Agents fan you are, so I would suggest you shell out for it. You won't be able to understand the stories, but I don't thin it detracts too much from the overall experience. I still laugh all the time at the manga stills and what I think is going on in them.

Gamefaqs is your friend and the menus are easy to learn.

I recommend both Ouendan games and band brothers DX. Ouendan only requires you to know the menu as for band brothers DX you can find a translation on Gamefaqs. Band brothers DX is good because you can have over 200 songs on your DS with 100 downloaded and the other composed. I offers alot of reply value in the form of 8 instruments for each song and a singng option. Also allows you to download the Band bros channel to connect DS to the TV as speakers.

Hey anybody here have soma bringer? I want to hear about it. I am heavily considering importing it, but its an RPG, and I would be missing out alot on the story. Oh and I look forward to hearing about Tales of Innocence.

I got both and I can tell you that you will need  a guide for those games since sometimes you are required to talk to certain people or obtain and item so its best that you can read abit of japanese for these games. That said Soma bringer requires you to talk to alot of people before moving to the next area to fight and and gather information to progress. The game advance in chapters and you can check how many more objective are needed to move on to next chapter. As for ToI it has a great storyline so you would be missing out if you are playing it in Jap. Other than that, I recommend both games if you don't mind missing out on storylines since you can get a guide online for that.
