The first true anime, not a short minute long episode, was Astro Boy.

Beat me to the punch, but the first true anime was Astro Boy (or as known in Japan "Mighty Atom"), based on the manga by Osamu Tezuka and aired around 1963.

Very true (and I fondly remember watching ALL the eps on TV when I was much younger...). But was Akira the first "full-length" Anime movie? Its also, much, much more twisted than Astro ever was... :)

Neon Genisis is the greatest anime ever (not including the film which was ment for idiots that didn't undersand the TV series). Given Anno's experiences in the 3 years before hand it is easy to see why it is so well written. It may surprise you to know that Anno was also had improtant roles in several Mayazaki films including Nausica, Luputa and the Ghibli short films.

The Melencholy of Suzimaya Haruhi is propably the second best anime after that. As someone who reads the novels I can only, say as great as the first series is it will only get better.

After that ther are lots of current/past animes I would recomend, most of which have been mentioned here.

PS any Studio Ghibli film = awesome.
