The first true anime, not a short minute long episode, was Astro Boy.

Beat me to the punch, but the first true anime was Astro Boy (or as known in Japan "Mighty Atom"), based on the manga by Osamu Tezuka and aired around 1963.

Very true (and I fondly remember watching ALL the eps on TV when I was much younger...). But was Akira the first "full-length" Anime movie? Its also, much, much more twisted than Astro ever was... :)
