Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Chrono,
I think your perception of the value of the PS3 may not be the same as the majority of the American consumer. And I'm not saying you are wrong in your perception it's just not the commonly held view. A lot of the things you mentioned as value are not perceived as value by most consumers.
For example not paying for online vs. quality of the experience. which one holds the perceived greater value? Right now the quality of experiene of hold the greater perceived value.
Also Blu-Ray vs DvD. which one has the perceived better value. Right now Dvd is seen as the better value. That will no doubt in time change as all things do.
So you can see how the american consumer believes they are getting better value and price with the 360. In time as perception changes, perhaps american consumers will see greater value in the PS3 and a price to match.

Americans lead the world in technology, I thought they would buy the most technologically advanced console of this generation over a 2nd rate console in the X360. What has happened to brand loyalty? people should stay loyal and support Sony. When I think of video games. I think of Play Station. |
I prefer a second rate console to second rate games/online experience. An awesome SNES game is still more fun today than trying to muddle through some of Lair's levels. As for being loyal? What kind of excuse is that? How about Sony be loyal to its consumers, and not force them to subsidize their choice in the video formatwar? When PS3 came out, all the sony fans got to pay an extra couple hundred dollars so Sony can make money on Blu-Ray going forward...

This is just it though, for the sake of "value", the PS3 is almost universally regarded as the better deal, you get way more for your buck then even some people know what to do with. For $400 you get your HD console, a blue-ray player, a guaranteed hard drive, wifi out of the box, HDMI 1.3, no online fee's, internet browser, free themes, full DivX codecs, and for many of us who know, we get dedicated servers for our online games (usually) which friggin rock. The PS3 is chock full of "value". Which is why I'm at a loss, as a customer, I wanted the most product for my money, and in that regard, the PS3 takes the victory hands down. I understand that all consoles will have great games, and I'm generally an easy pleaser (although admittedly I didn't like Haze >_> ). I am looking for that reason, and I will consider America at fault until the rest of the world proves reason otherwise. I live in California, and MANY of the people I talk to on a daily basis shouldn't be making decisions :( It's pretty sad sometimes out here ><

What "value" means is entirely subjective. Everyone values different things. Maybe consumers place more value on the 360's superior online experience or the fun shooters that the 360 has? I also take umbrage with your characterization of the US. It is insulting and simply not true.
| Parasitic said: I'm still undecided whether I'm getting a 360 or ps3 (already had a 360 then refunded it, now I'm "trying" out a ps3) since both have many things that interest me, but recently I realized something - having the more popular console would be a good thing since I like to play online alot, especially with others I know. I live in the U.S and most people I've met have a 360, and I'm wondering why. I'm guessing two of the big things are.....A) Halo3, and B) the price. From my experience, the first thing a "casual" gamer will look at is the price tag. Is there more to it though? I actually never cared about sales info untill I decided to get a console, since I really wanna make sure I get the one that suits me best. What is it about the 360 that's making it sell alot more than the ps3 here? |
1. Price
2. Growing library of diverse games
3. Better online experience
4. Has more powerful console pushing games in the 1st and 2nd party.
Blu Ray already won it's war. The PS3 is going up against the 360, so all the fanboys need to shut up about Blu Ray this and Blu Ray that. It would be dead if the PS3 didn't exist, so give it the credit it's due and leave it at that. Until the PS3 the market was rejecting Blu Ray and HD.
The 360 has been out for way longer, all the sony haters got the 360 way before the ps3 was out.

I highly doubt it's "The Games" that your speaking of considering both consoles have "The Games". It's about image. I'd easily say Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, and Bioshock EASILY shame Halo 3, but which one caught the image? The games that do insanely well were geared to do so. I don't like Microsoft as a company, but they know how to pull massive strings when it comes to advertising. And they know what to pimp out as well.
And like mentioned above, the year head start with word of mouth also really helps. Many people pick up consoles this day in age to play with they're friends. And with the increasing use of online play, it was an attractive console @ the PS3's launch. This day in age however, the value isn't anywhere near as amazing, and were seeing that trend in the sales market, the gap is nowhere near as extreme.

"Easy shame Halo 3" ? Halo is, and always has been about the multiplayer experience. Most Halo players spend 95%+ of their overall Halo playing time on multi, not the campaign. You listed great games there (especially Mass Effect, which is IMO the greatest new IP of this generation) but they fill different slots. Once I beat Mass Effect the third time, it was time to give it a break. Whereas I can pick up Halo for the occasional Live game with friends and have a blast. A great title combining great replayability(which multiplayer is the #1 factor in) and a convenience social experience deserves plenty of respect.

Chrono, this isn't a personal attack, but I'd be careful, there, buddy. That's not a good road to go down. Every society across the world has thier share of exceptionally intelligent people as well as those destined for less intellecutal, blue-collar pursuits. I used to think that the Japanese were exceptionally smart people. After spending time in the country, they are no different than anywhere else. There are intellecutals and garbage collectors. Professors and jack-hammer operators. Stock brokers and dump-truck drivers. If the U.S. was so bad, why do we still have so many people coming from foreign countries to get a higher education in our universities? Students from all over the world flock to U.S. institutions for computer, engineering, science, medical, and other technical degrees. Americans take a lot of heat from abroad for not being "worldly". Part of the reason is that we don't HAVE to. The vast majority of Americans haven't seen a significant portion of our own country much less other ones. Being ignorant to the ways and cultures of other countries doesn't have anything to do with intelligence... |
LOL yeah I'm just giving our country crap for the ugly stuff like Bell curving the tests standards, increased poverty, lowering economy, re-electing bush, lowering IQ :( Stuff like that, I realize every country's got it's probs and stuff, but man were not on the high end of the stick at the moment >< I'm just taking my pot shots :P Many a people come out here to learn as well because it's cheaper, more available, better credentialed, and you can make a killing here in America being a business owner/doctor/astronaut,??? y'know xD I just think it's kinda sad that I have to go near a Starbucks to eavesdrop on people that sound like they know what they're talking about :(
@Scat, well anyone that's played an online game from both PS3 and 360 will tell you that they're not THAT different. Im fact most of the time for me the PS3 version is better :/ I like my servers. The "value" of xbox live is that it has alot more to offer(and pay for mind you), than the PS3. There is no way I can beat around the value bush on that one :/ The PSN isn't nearly as far behind as people like to make it out to be.
@Mrstick Yeah I know XD But they're doing better than we are atm >< America needs to get some priorities strait ;-;
From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

I don't think "buying American" has anything to do with it. Americans are not country loyal. Remember, we are a band of (relatively) recent immigrants. We have people who live permanently in this country but compete in the olympics for other countries, root for their teams when they visit the U.S., live in "little versions" of their own country with localized signs, businesses, etc. We aren't die-hard "buy American!" people. If that were the case, American car manufacturers wouldn't be on the brink of bankruptcy and Wal-Mart would be out of business (90% made in China). I hate Microsoft with a fucking passion. However, there are many great games on the 360 and I enjoy playing them. If I could take every game from the 360 library that has a metacritic of 50% or higher and get all the titles Microsoft has coming down the pipe moved to the PS3, I'd switch to my PSWii exclusively. That isn't going to happen so the 360 remains in my living room and I both enjoy the games on it and look forward to many more in the future. |
QFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
