Doom 4 Announced, Will Use Tech 5 Engine but Look Better than RAGE

Today John Carmack revealed at QuakeCon '08 that the "next Doom" -- which we'll call Doom 4, for now -- is in development and looking good.

"The next DOOM game will look like it's built on another engine, as it uses three times the horsepower." It'll operate at 30 frames per second. -- 1UP, quoting Carmack


He also said that Doom 4's multiplayer will be "more extensive" than Doom 3's.

The more advanced graphics do come at a cost, though. In comparison, RAGE runs at 60 frames per second.

i hope they make it more like the old ones and less like doom 3, i had to use a mod that attaches flash light to every gun to enjoy the game

I hope it's less shiney... I just imagine hell spawn to be dark and light absorbant...

Doom 3 was fun though, I am just saying.

Awww, sorry to hear that. I thought the flashlight made the experience even better. Nothing's more satisfying then hitting a creature from hell in the face with a flashlight! XD

Good news indeed. Let's just hope it will play decently on my laptop, because RAGE looks just too good, but this will be looking better? @_@

i've tried to get into doom 3 like 6 times, but i can never get past the first hour or so

Doom3 was a failure in every aspect accept the audio-visual presentation... it was so generic, like all they did is just wanted to show off their game engine. Now look how well that tech was used by Chronicles of Riddick: EfBB and then let us all hope that Escape from Dark Athena will use the Tech Engine 5 to show of some really impressive gameplay ;)

I despised the game design of D3.. monsters always spawning behind you isn't scary, it's annoying.

Well, at least it was one of the few fps games I actually finished (maybe because it's multiplayer was too boring to be a distraction from the single player mode).

 

Still, I have hope id manages to learn from the mistakes they made with that game and is able to deliever a "D4" (or whatever it will be called) which isn't only eye-candy .
