Forums - Nintendo - GTA:Chinatown War Speculation Thread.

What do you think it's going to be?

How do you think it is going to sell?

Me:

They are going to make it a gang-war strategy game.  Probably something along the lines of mission based, tactical squad combat, with strong RPG elements.  Cameo appearances from past GTA games.  Wifi multiplayer.  Buildings and civilians will get in the way, if you know what I mean.  Factions will include the different gangs and police.  Scenarios will include bank robberies, turf wars, car thefts, etc. but will often break out into larger "battles" for that war.  I don't know if there will be chapters or over world, but it will not be full 3D like previous iterations; Rockstar will opt for a better look but less freedom.

I think initial sales will be disappointing because gamers hate change, but people will warm up to it and it will have great legs.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Did my comment get deleted? Anyway, I would like to see a 3D game.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

I think it may be like the older GTAs with top down view and maybe same game play as GTA2.

Why would they make a top bottom view?

1. Make a title in a popular genre you're number 1 in.

2. Make a title in a dead genre.

That is VGChartz LONGEST review. And it's NOT Cute Kitten DS

The problem with full 3d is that GTA already looked about as bad as I could tolerate on PSP. I hope they can either work magic or find some new art direction.

Anybody that knows about the technical side of the DS, is there any real way to make a giant overworld 3D GTA on the DS's hardware without it turning into muddy garbage?

Personally I say they make it into a 2D with depth beat 'em up like Streets of Rage.

By the way, where is Chinatown supposed to be in relation to the GTA universe? I don't remember seeing a Chinatown in GTA IV, and that would be the most logical location would be to have it in Liberty City.

There's no way that it'd be 3-D.

The PSP could barely pull off 3-D on the gorgeous 4.3 inch screen, and graphics.

With DS graphics, and smaller screen, I don't know how it'd work.

3D! I hope! Or i would lose interest in the game.

They already essentially revealed that it's planned to be a 3-D game when they said that it'll have the "same free-roaming GTA style" that we're used to. According to Wikipedia, it'll play in Liberty City and will feature a custom game engine. The DS is essentially a streamlined N64 in that it can handle richer colors, more textures, and more detailed textures, and much larger game size (so far, up to 4 times the size of the largest N64 titles). Body Harvest was Rockstar's (when they were still DMA Design) original 3-D GTAIII-style free-roaming sandbox game and it was built for the N64. Also, GTA:CW will feature online play as the website for the game features the Nintendo Wi-Fi logo.

From the press release:

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is an entirely original entry into the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto series, and brings a new level of interactivity to its sprawling open environments. With the use of the DS touch screen, players will navigate their way through the streets as they uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption within the Triad crime syndicate, delivering the unprecedented amount of depth that has become a true trademark of the franchise.

"Sprawling open environments?" That doesn't sound like a top-down 2-D game to me.
