Well, it's a supply and demand issue to be honest. I can't imagine that many people want to buy the 40gb if they have the knowledge a new system with upgraded controller and disk space is coming soon. And those who are unknowing of the upgrade may walk into stores where stock is depleted. It's a double whammy.

 When the 40 gigs are all out. Sony isn't a stranger to this move. I'm sure they are ready for the next step already.

Sony didn't up their Fiscal Year shipment figures for the PS3. I've heavily doubted they actually planned to limit their output to that level as a means to ensure profitability but this could be a sign they seriously only plan to ship 10 million.

It this is stock related (and it seems likely), then the numbers will bounce in the coming weeks.

The other possibility is this: with the "reduced" price 360s around, and a shortage of 40gig (cheap) PS3s - people may simply be choosing the "cheaper" console at the moment.

360s --> cheaper than normal
80gig PS3s --> more expensive than normal

I notice the gap is up to 5.53 from 5.40 as well. So not only did the PS3 sell through estimate drop like a rock but there was about a 0.07 down adjustment as well.
