Forums - Sales - Sony in danger of losing game crown to Nintendo

Nintendo lost the crown in the first place. They'd only be regaining it, and only temporarily. Also, I don't see their next console being near as good as this one. The Wii's mystique will wear off. The only hope for nintendos next gen - which based on the sucess of the Wii could still be a while away, despite the fact that the Wii is inferior in raw power to the PS3 and 360, would be for them to make VR. Walks in: WiiHelm. It could happen..but another system similar to the Wii will not make it again, believe that. At the same time, Nintendo is possibly the most creative of the 3, I wouldnt be even a little surprised if they began to lean towards VR with their next system. It's their only saving grace, in my opinion.

I find no fault with the author the reality is that Sony gaming dominance has been taken for granted, and still is be a great cross section of society. They are rather oblivious to the situation as it stands. Sony took a terrible gamble, and only now is the division turning towards break even, and it probably is not going to remain there. Neither Microsoft or Nintendo are bound to let Sony crawl back with their current hardware.

Do I find fault with Stringer not really he comes across as being thoroughly competent. After all he got his current job based upon his competency, and his strategy for the company in my opinion was the correct one. Sony had become too bloated and too diversified. Sometimes the conflicts of interest between divisions result in wasted effort. The hallmark of this problem is the PS3.

Which Stringer himself has pointed out on numerous occasions. He disliked the format wars, and felt they were needlessly wasteful. He was right Sony ended up bleeding itself forcing a format on the market. He was not too keen on the Cell processor, poor library support, or the high price of the system. He said these things numerous times.

What one feels when they read such comments is that while he disliked the situation it was too far gone by the time he arrived at Sony to do anything about. I suspect sometimes that he is the only one at Sony that makes anything approaching sense. He fully understood the problem with the PS3 right out of the gates, and more to the point he wasn't going to paint water colors about those problems.

When you think about it had Sony adopted a more conventional architecture. Had they come to an accord about future high definition media, and had they ensured that their hardware was reasonably priced. They could have even gotten more third parties on board. The console might have sold many more consoles at this point rather then becoming a massive money pit. Strangling the profitability out of an entire division.

The 250m figure is not even correct.

Figures from this site:

PS1: 100 million or so, PS2: 115 million or so, PS3: 14 milllion or so, PSP: 35 million or so....that's, 264 million and i rounded down.

But the 420 million figure is higher, no doubt there.

PS1 sold 102 million

PS2 sold 140 million

are you a gamer ?

You are a complete fanboy. Does it really matter that Nintendo sold more hardware and Sony sold more home consoles?

How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

Why so much praise for Stringer? If he believed all these things, as CEO, he coould have stoppped them from happening but he didn't except he wasn't the WW CEO yet. If he was, he's responsible for all sony's failures...from the ps3 to sony BMG

@Phrancheyez and chapset

At this point in time I don't think you can make the assumption about how any console will perform in the next generation ...

Right now between the massive success of the Nintendo DS and Wii I think that it is fairly safe to assume that no matter what Nintendo produces in the next generation third party publishers will give them full support immediately; on top of this, people are probably far more likely to buy the same make of console from one generation to the next if there is no real reason to change manufacturers. These two factors give Nintendo the same advantage that Sony had heading into this generation.

The two things that will determine who is the most successful console in the next generation is whether the console manufacturers learned from their (and eachother's) mistakes, and whether the console manufacturers learned from Nintendo's success; if Sony (to pick a company) thinks that the reason the Wii is popular is that it is a low powered inexpesive system with simple games, and ignores the value of inovation in user interface, it is quite possible that they will produce hardware that is so unpopular that it rivals the nGage in mockability.

Nintendo have always been king of software, but not always consoles.

Where are Nintendo's other franchises at? People say they milk the same 5, I KNOW they have others. We all would love to see em'.

As for Sony, I don't know what they could do with their IPs.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

Maybe maybe not but if u manage to sell over 100 million with 2 consoles each in a row i think thats pretty damm good.

yes like you said they will need good inovation but not expensive ones, blu-ray was a pretty good inovation in my opinion but was to expensive while the wii mote was even a better a inovation and cheaper, if i was 14 years old right now i woulnd't have been able to get me a ps3 so i think the cheaper the better.

 but i could be wrong.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.
