They are "dangerous" only if you break them, in which case the small amount of Mercury they contain will spill out. Just be careful with them and you will be fine. For added peace of mind, buy a model that has an outer shell that protects the actual spiral.

@dogs_rule, the amount of mercury in them is far from dangerous on its own. Plus, how often in your lifetime are you actually around a broken light bulb. I think i have cleaned up less than 10 in my entire 32 years.

probably a bad one, but just like full fluorescents if on and off cycles are under 5 minutes it tends to lower their lifespan.

Still even if it lasted only a couple months, it saved you enough cash to pay for another one or part of a multi-pack.

why dont you try out an LED bulb? they last longer then CFLs and use less electricity. They tend to be a bit more pricey but their cost is paid for within a few months to a year.
