Can anyone make sense of this? Did MS really outsell (I should say outship) the PS3 in Q1?

I'm not actually sure the totals are really from the same time period, which would be essential for such a comparison.

Hmm...I thought the same, but he does say it's the same period.  I think the issue is from using figures from different sources and hoping they'd match up somehow.

Well the first issue I see is that the OP is just subtracting sold to consumer numbers from a shipment total. What remains does certainly include the shipment for others, but it also contains the difference between shipped and sold for NA as well as Japan. Seeing as how we don't know exactly how they split the shipments, I don't think you can really use this as definitive evidence of anything.

...

MS shipped more consoles to stuff the channel for a temporary price drop on the 20 gig. This way they can increase their console sales without a permanent price reduction.

Sony shipped fewer 40 gigs because they are truly phasing it out. No temporary price drop to bolster sales.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Maybe the 360 is more stocked at retailers than the PS3 in the various regions. This seems to be the case at local dealers for my country.

In any case it's nice to see the PS3 (considering entry pricing) and PS2 (considering market saturation) both outsold the 360 to retail for this period yet again. The PS2 outsold the 360 by many millions of units during Sony's last two fiscal years (about 28 sold to retail in total, almost double). The PS3 also outsold the 360 by more than 1.5 million units for 2007. For the first quarter of 2008 the PS3 also outsold the 360 more than 1 million units to retail.

Combine this with Wii sales the 360 already lost an amazing amount of market share within a short timespan. Like I stated before I think this year will be the final good sales year for the 360. Nearly all major XBox games already received 360 sequels (only the multiplatform Starwars and Fable 2 remaining). Microsoft failed to really capitalize on its entry pricing advantage compared to the PS3, as well as with regard to its 1 year or considerably more headstart for the various markets.

With games truly eyecatching games like God of War 3, Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 coming out soon, as well as Playstation Home and greatly improving Blu-Ray penetration I think the 360's long term outlook looks pretty bleak as expected.

Really? do you really think retailers would order more 360's in those months then the PS3's just for fun? Think about it for a second, its not the holidays where retailers are expecting an increase in sales. Retailers are just ordering consoles at the rate they sell. Meaning the 360 has been outselling the PS3 in "Others" which is...  quite a shock...

Aren't you the same person that kept hammering that the 360 sold poorly in February/March because it was out of stock ?

Make up your mind...

Microsoft itself stated they had issue supplying NA market from Jan to March which means they started the quarter in the US with channels close to being empty. Seeing how easilly you can find a 360 now, that is no longer the case, so they clearly sold more to retailers in NA than retailers sold to customers........

That never came into consideration, but yeah that definetely could be the answer

You can't compare shipments to sales - there were something like 1.5m PS3s in the channel in March and ~500k now so those 1m have all been sold during last quarter as well.

Try using the figures on the site

NVM that I keep forgetting were in the middle of another quarter.

Otherwise I agree, although I would say indications are even less in channel than ~500k WW with the last shipments of 40s in the US at the end of June. Signs point to the same in the EU as well.

1.5 million at the end of March in channel? If so that would mean you would have to add in the additional 1.56 million shipped here. With 500k left in channel that would mean they would have had to sold ~2.5 million in this quarter, but that would be very much off.

VGChartz has 2.7 millions sold for the quarter. Doesn't seem that much off...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Those are shipments, not system sales.

Perhaps, but if you take NPD+MC for the time and subtract it from 2.7 million you get 1.7 million for others and the rest of NA. That to me doesn't add up, but then again I've said others has been off for the last few weeks now, but more so for the most recent weeks.

You need to re-read poster under me. That is 2.7 million VGC has stated sold in the quarter minus NPD and MC. These are all sold numbers.

Ugh.....NPD and MC are not shipped. You can't just subtract them from a total shipped number and come up with solely the shipped for others. You're ignoring the difference between shipped and sold to consumer and driving me nucking futs.

Wait that doesn't even matter I took the 2.7 million that he stated VGC has for the quarter and subtracted the NPD and MC numbers. VGC is sold to customers the last time I remember.
